Hi all,
This may have been addressed here before, but I was
reading about wheel spacing. I have a JD 990 and some
of my farm has some semi-steep slopes that up till now,
I've just been going straight up or down. From what I've read, the wheels can be spaced further apart for a better
center of gravity. I already have (6) front wheel weights
and was wondering if anyone else have done this and if this
is good for driving across steep places.
thnx

I would like to help you , I to have a 990, but unless I try to run in one or two of the ditches my land is not that steep to worry about , ..... My tractor is back at the dealers for a 50 hour and other add ons , ( wheel wieghts , and valve connections at the rear ) I will ask them what they think and get back to you .

I had a 1070 and used it on some severe sidehills. It was a real billygoat by reversing the front wheels, then widening the rears as much as required. Unless the 990's wheels don't offer different spacing like the x70 series did, you have the ability to move the wheels out by 2" increments. My 1070 had 8 settings, and I went out to the 4th setting, which put the wheels 80" from outside to outside. The 5th-8th settings take them out to extreme widths.

Sorry about not getting back to you sooner , Home PC died , ..
Any way , My dealer goes along with what is in the owners manual as to spacing , not having a lot of steep hills around here , they do not have much experiance in this area , most of their customers are looking to keep the spacing close ..........

Thnx for the info Bill,
Yeah, I saw this in my owners manual also, but was wondering if anyone ever has done this and what effect it
has on steeper grades. This past weekend I was looking over the tires/rims and could see how these can be adjusted. It seems that the front wheels can just be reversed (put the left on right etc, and both backwards) so the air nipple is inside.
But the rear wheels need the rim taken apart and reversed.
When I get this done (hopefully next weekend) I'll post back to say how its going.......Shawn

Sorry I could not be of more help to you , I had the deal install wheel wieghts , BIG differance in the way she moves , and rides , I have R4 on her and it will take the grass up in a tight turn , but in that I run most oft the time in plowed fields this is not a problem .
I now get alot of traction from the rear wheels and it seems like less slipping , but may have moved the slip to the front wheels , , with FEL I have not had any problems with this or steering if I ever take the FEL off then I am sure it would be....
Just for the record the wheel wieghts are 100 lbs per ring , and two rings per wheel for a total of 400lbs.
Next project is to made a ballist box targeting about 350 lbs should do it for maximum FEL capacity ...

I didn't get a chance to space the wheels last
weekend, but I do have front weights on. I
actually have six (42 lbs) weights on the front,
none on back. also, I don't have a FEL, which I
know whould add a lot of weight.
