Ok I know I've asked my fair share of questions here. But let me tell you it has helped me tremendously. So many things that I never would have known, etc etc. THANKS.
I am now looking at a very reasonably priced '41 9N. Well maintained, everything seems to work so far. A bunch of attachments incl. I'll go back tomorrow and do a final check before I buy it.
Anyhow I know there are some big differences between 8/9N's. Are 9N's still reasonably good tractors for around the house? I'll be mowing 8 acres, cultivating, and likely a few other things. Will there be much difference?

Thanks again.

Only real difference I can see is the 9n doesn't have position control.
But you can add that by getting a Zane Thang.

My only question would be about the tranny gearing.
Is it the same gearing as an 8n just no 4th gear,
or is the ratios different and more spread out.
Seems like I remember seeing a chart somewhere about this.
Have to go look for it now I guess.

If you can get a good tractor I wouldn't worry about it being a 9n or 8n.

Pooh Bear: Yes.. gearing is different.. different ratios.

8n vs 9n

As mentioned.. 8n has position and draft control.. 9n has draft control hydraulics. Cheap answer is to get a set of limit chains and let the mower rest on them.

brakes: 9n has a brake pedal on either side ( straddle brakes).. most people don't like this because they don't adjust them correctly, and believe that you cant clutch and hit the brakes at the same time.. when in fact you can. The left brake has a dog on it that is/can be engaged by the clutch pedal. As you depress the clutch fully.. it engages the left brake.. then you hit the right brake with right foot.. 8n has both brakes on right side.. hit one or both with one foot.

9n has no starter solenoid.. only big pedistal mounted switch... 9n has a 3rd brush manually adjustable 11 amp genny 8n has a genny that uses a vr and might pump 20a.. etc.

9n uses a different steering scheme. Works great if not worn. Harder to adjust than 8n steering.

9n has no running boards.. only foot pegs. 8n running boards can be modified to work.. or make-yer-own boards are easy to fab up and hang over the foot pegs.. course.. the foot pegs are kinda cute!

Minor differences in engine.. cyl sleaves.. governor oil line.. cylinder head and compression ratio.. etc.

9n uses a tsx 33 carb.. 8n uses a tsx 241(abc) carb. they are functionally identical.. same kit rebuilds either carb...

An N in average condition pulls a 5' rotary mower fine in 1st gear thru moderate brush. or a 4' mower thru anything it can crawl over..

Hey- thanks for the replies- so far it sounds like if you can handle a few minor inconvieniences, it should be ok. It's old, it's been around and has signs of a little wear but overall it looks nice. It is kept on a very hilly lot, and even the surrounding roads aree too steep for me to really get going on it. The clutch/brakes do seem to work well though. I think the attachments really help my decision making!(disker, 3 diamond harrows, 2 blades (one good one). A mower'd be too much to ask for but I'll find one.
It's funny because there are foot pegs, but 3-4" below are foot grates, which I knew were add ons. They fit it well, likely from and 8N. No complaints there- it's for working not show and they are handy.
The right/left brakes are crazy! But if and when I get it it'll be quickly learned on the flats. The owner originally bought it for his small acreage but it is way to hilly for it, so it has sat there with about 10 hrs on the rblt engine. I never believe that w/o a receipt but it runs nice. Needs to be choked even when hot but that is nothing compared to that beast in my last posted question. Now all I need to arrange is a trailer to get it home. It's 4 hrs from my place. Will update if it goes through. Thanks again!!!
