9n with 8n engine

I have Ford 8n and part 9n. I have the three speed transmission but the side mount distributor engine. I first thought someone had just replaced the engine with a later one but I am starting to wonder if I am wrong. Since I have owned the tractor the engine block had been welded. I actually did not see it until I owned the tractor for awhile it started to leak internally and externally. This is what has me wondering though the serial number on the block is stamped 8n and under that is a letter b and below that a number 1 and nothing else. Is this a early side mount engine mated to the rear of the 9n? If so is it worth trying to salvage this block or do what my original plan was and replace? The rear axle tube is dated April 1, 1947 for further information.

The 8N side mount distributor came out in 1950 and ran through 1952. The '51 started with ser# 8N343593 and went to 8N44203. The "B" was changed to a "C" in 1951 at serial #433578, so we know the engine is either a 1950 or 1951. I don't know what the #1 designates - sorry! As for the leak, I guess it depends on where it's leaking and how bad. If it was mine, I'd probably just start looking for another engine. JMO!

Actually, I have already located another block if all goes right. It will be a month till I get it but the tractor still runs and I have another tractor anyhow. I was hoping maybe I had a rare low number block but I guess not. My original idea that someone already swapped engines is all that happened. If it is no special casting number it is not worth trying to salvage since others are available.
