I was wondering how you operate your A/C... do you use the Fresh Air or Recirc mode?

On my M5040 I have been using Recirc mode and I have noticed alot of dust collecting inside the cab.

The owners manual says to use the Fresh Air Mode to keep dust out of the cab. That just sounds backwards to me....

I guess I will try the Fresh Air Mode and see if it makes any difference with the dust.

Recirc will yield cooler vent temperatures as the system is drawing air from inside the cab that is presumably cooler than the ambient temp.

Fresh air will keep more dust out, as fresh air is drawn through the cab filters and pressurizes the cab, forcing air out all the little cracks and voids where the dust is getting in while you use recirc.

In either case, keep the fan speed high, and regulate the temperature with the thermostatic control. This prevents evaporator freezup, and helps keep dust out of the cab by pressurizing it. Direct the airflow away from you rather than turning the fan to a lower speed to remain comfortable if fan blast is an issue.

The "fresh air" mode draws air in from outside the tractor, along with dust. The "recerc" mode recirculates the air within the cab, cooling the air more each time it goes back through the A/C unit.
When you first start the tractor, with a warm cab, open a window or two. Place the A/C on "fresh air" and the fan on high. This will expell the hot air from the cab. After a couple of minutes, when the hot air is gone from the cab, switch over to "Recerc" and close the windows and your good to go.

Fresh air is definitely the way to go. It creates an outward pressure so that dust doesn't leak in around the door and through the other various orfices as RickB says.

Anyone who has used these tractors in the summer in dusty conditions would tell you the same thing. I have used it in both modes thinking like ibnxe, but he is dead wrong.

Recirculation mode - dust everywhere in the cab.
Fresh air mode - no dust in the cab. The filters will keep out the dust

The fresh air intake has an air filter on it so there will be clean cool air in the cab to keep the dusty air outside as others have said. You should check the filter occasionally if you are working in dusty conditions with the fresh air intake on.

The primary reason I bought a tractor with a cab was to be able to mow in the summer and not become sick from pollen (i have severe allergies to pollen and dust) I always use recip vs. fresh air assuming the fresh air mode would suck in pollen....sounds like I'm worng???

Thats exactly what I thought.......recirc would keep out the dust.....but it didn't seem to work....

Sooooo.... today I wiped up most of the dust from the cab.......bushogged for about 8 hours using Fresh Air Mode..... and was suprised to see no dust!!! I did have to run the fan at a higher speed, but based on what I have read posted here, that helps to better pressurize the cab.

I'm a beliver now in the Fresh Air Mode.......just have to monitor to change/clean the air inlet filter!

Try the fresh air mode and see if it makes any difference for you!
