Other than viewing them both as classics in their own way; an odd juxtaposition. Seems as though the contrasts in origin, time, technology and function are pretty overwhelming. Would like to own them both.

Both designs are iconic/classic, as 2LC noted.
Both achieve a lot, and do it economically.
Both are hard to beat, performance wise, on the right track/route.
The Tri-Motor was cutting edge, while the Miata is retro, a la Lotus or Alfa Spyder.
Mazda was 40%(?) owned by Ford for a number of years.
