In my part of the world, deer can be hunted only with shotgun slug or muzzleloader. I'm more inclined to shotgun. Any favorites for the expressed purpose of firing a slug at a hunk of meat?

Too many good options to list but you could start here.
Pump Action Shotgun - Model 870 Express Slug - Remington Shotguns
A modern muzzleloader that meets your states requirements is also a good option and gives more range then a shotgun with slug barrel but has a slower follow up shot time. not a problem if you make the first one count.

I'm sort of leaning more to shotgun, mostly because I have an area on the farm that would be pretty decent for skeet. I'd favor a "slug gun" function over skeet, but seems like a lot of the modern shotguns can exchange barrels pretty easily.

most all can, 870 is a great gun so is the 1100 also mossberg makes a nice pump. the newer slugs like a full rifled barrel they have a Cantilever that a scope mounts on so when switching back to a smooth bore the scope stays on the barrel. nothing wrong with the new inline muzzle loaders either.

The very best Shotgun for slugs is the Savage 220. Very accurate....It shoots like a house-afire. Read about via a google search. Terrific slugger IMO.

I put one together for my grandson. Ragged one-hole groups at 100 yards are possible with the right slugs. Kinda fussy about scope mounting. Read up on it. I put the picatinny scope mount base on it from xxxx...which is the right thing for scopes.

Get a gun with a rifled bbl and rifle sights. I shot 36 deer with my Winchester Whitetails unlimited. I like slugs over rifle in the woods with all te slashings because the heavy lead slug doesn't deflect as much as a rifle bullet when it hits a small sapling. They are good up to about 120yrds if you are a good shooter.

That's what I've been reading. It's good to hear there are lots of good choices. Makes the shopping that much more fun.
