I don't have a toothbar for my 16LA 72" bucket yet. I have other things I need more at the time and 2 kids at TX A&M. I haven't had a chance to try this out yet and I was wondering. I need additional weight for the rear of my tractor and I have a disc already. Wouldn't a disc work to losen soil for dirt removal, and give some ballast at the same time? I could disc an area and then scoop it out with a fel. Anyone tried this? Does it make the soil too loose for dirtwork with a fel? I did get 4wd, so that'll help.

TIA, MP

I think you would have better luck with scarifiers down on a box blade to rip the ground loose, then use the FEL.

If its hard at all, don't think the disk will penetrate.

As long as that's what you have - it's worth a shot -- won't cost ya nothing to try. BTW Mark - here's a pic of my QA - and bucket conversion --- I set the brackets I cut off on top - and you can see the plate that got welded on -- Works just as advertised. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks Mike! It looks good. The attachment plate is much larger than I thought. Were the old mounts cut off flush with the back of the bucket?

Ronr, Penetration is not a problem. I'm worried it may over penetrate and be too loose and I'll loose traction. Besides, I don't have a BB. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I can't wait for summer to have more time to test all theories more. This kind of research I can deal with. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks guys, MP

Yeah Mark - I cut the brackets off -- ground down what was left flush and clean - and was planning on welding the plate on myself - but got called away for a week and I wanted it done yesterday ...(good as an excuse as any) so I took it to a local welding shop and they stuck it on for $70 ---- They called me and said it was ready 2 days after I took it in ..... I was out of town - asked them to be sure not to sell it before I got back /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ... I was out of town getting a well drilled. They went 488 feet, water came up in the casing to 88 feet - so I have 400 feet of water and it's clean & green. initial testing by the drillers showed very good results. I'll get it fully tested later in the summer.

MP,

I always carry my disk when doing loader work. The weight is perfect, and it's very quick and easy to disk up dirt and push it up in a pile with the FEL. To me, it's a lot easier on the tractor and loader than a tooth bar. The disked up dirt is much finer and easier to spread, too!

Bob, Ahhhh, someone who thinks like me. A lot of people might not think that's such a good thing. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I was thinking it would take strain off the fel too because your pushing loose dirt instead of compact dirt. I'm going to hit the low water ring around my pond this way, while it's dry. That may be a while. My disc is on my old tractor and with folks visiting this weekend I just didn't have a chance to try the theory out. Glad to hear it works.

Thanks, MP

I use the 67 bolens with a tiller and do the same thing.

This is probably a little exaggeration, but look at your hand and ask yourself if it would work just as well without fingers? Based on that analysis, you can decide if you need a toothbar. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

In all seriousness, you will find ways of using that toothbar that have nothing to do with digging dirt. You can loosen rocks, hang a chain around one of the teeth, move limbs by dragging them sideways, etc., etc.. Your idea with the disc will probably work for the specific application you have, but in no way will it replace all the useful things you can do with a toothbar. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
