A dumb question

Along with working for a living, playing with the TC-40D, and living on our dirt (by my neighbor's, and my, choice) road, I also shoot and carry, legally, of course, and so, have to reload.

I've been using corncob to clean some used brass, lately 3K worth of 5.56 fired auto, also legally, into my berm, and I'm wondering...

There were corncob pipes, and, today, there's brass tumbling, but to what other uses were corncobs, processed or not, applied?

And why do they cost so much?

You can chop it fine and compress with a lil glue, makes a pretty good board as long as it's non structural. You can burn it.. you can make it into corn husk dolls. You can make blowguns from the stalks, and using a thorn from a honey locust, you can make a dart for it, from the cob.

Commercially.. you can sell any of the above, but thats about all I know for corncobs.. unless you wanna talk about TP..

I believe jewelers use it in much the same manor as you use it for reloading.

I think I remember a farmer neighbor tell me they use to use them in the outhouse. Ouch!

Take forever to break down but they are great in the compost pile.

Used for feed ... filler for feed ... and used when the Sears Roebuck catalog is not readily available.
Used for crafts - carving, doll-making, etc.
Chip it and it makes excellent mulch.
Of course ... I don't know whether corncobs is corncobs ... since there is a world of difference between Injun corn and eatin' corn. I think the Mexican Cooking book that I was reading a couple of nights ago listed 5 major types of corn ... all significantly different ... so the corncobs may well be different too.
And then we have the new genetically "enhanced" corn ...

Anybody ever heard of corncob jelly? I think the cob has a thickening agent, I assume "corn starch", in it along with a fair amount of sugar.

Used for insulation in the walls and attic years ago. You think dry wood burns good. Wait to you see one with a corn cob lining on fire!!!

Spencer, a lot of novelty shops used to sell little "emergency kits" (may still do it, but I don't know) that had 3 corn cobs; two red and one white. The instructions said to use a red one first, then use the white one to see whether you needed the other red one./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
