A good friend just picked up a low hrs JD 5403, and it broke. "PTO"

The plate on top of the transmission where the PTO lever attaches broke off. It is a threaded hole where only one bolt
holds the PTO lever in place. Looks like a very poor design to me.

I figured to get the days work done, we could position the PTO lever by hand to engage the PTO, but no such luck.
Why could we not get the PTO to engage manualy?

Any ideas on a fix?

It's a shoulder bolt. Extract the broken piece and replace the bolt. If the bolt was loose, it would bind, breaking the bolt. Make sure the adjustment is properly done.

Check it out with your Deere dealer. It should not have just broken with normal use, and maybe some underlying cause is the culprit.

Not possible to get some pictures and post them? A neighbor, some friend, some kid?

Might be time to try JB weld. I don't really like the stuff but it beats replacing an entire case. That's a whole lot of labour whether you pay for it or do it yourself.

Which bolt broke?

My guess is the cover part 17 that bolt part 3 from your drawing bolts into. RE71881 over $800
