I know others have touched on this in better detail but sometimes putting a project off for someday means it never gets done. Here is a quick thing to do that will only help you in the long run.

I used a strong circular magnet and with stainless wire I tied it to the hydraulic oil reservior tank cap leaving it long enough to hang down into the oil. It actually is too long for the PT180 and sticks to the tunnel. But it still works. Attached are pictures of when I recently checked the oil and although the pictures don't show it well, the magnet had a silvery look to it. I wiped it off with the paper towel to show you how much has accumulated on it in approx 25 hours.

It is worth doing and only takes a few minutes. Your only problem might be what to use to tie the magnet. I had stainless hanging around for safety wiring things.

God Bless

I put heavy duty magnets on the sides of my oil filters. Works like a charm.

. When I have time I cut open my filters to have a look inside. Is there anything noticeable when you put the magnets on the outside of the can? My Kubota has magnets that look like O-rings on the open side of the hyd filters. I wonder if the flow would tend to wash off the insides of the filter can where the outside magnet is trying to hold the particles. Every bit helps especially when it is as simple as sticking a magnet on the can.

That looks effective. I'll give that a try on mine; thanks.

Yup. I will take pictures this winter when I Do my change. I do use multiple neodymium magnets. It is noticeable but I am not sure how wear inducing what I remove truly is. If you want to see the right way in my opinion on how to magnetically filter your oil look at Ken simolo setup.

I believe I seen his post while searching the threads. And my option is a joke compared to his, but if I wait till I open the hyd reservior to drill and tap in a hyd oil temp gauge/sender and a magnetic tree, it will be a long time away.
It is my belief that any foreign material, especially abrasive, that you can get out of circulation will greatly extend all your components life.

Your belief s 100 % correct. Anything foreign in the oil will create wear. I am just not sure that the wear caused by microscopic content in the oil is going to cause mor abrupt end of life. In my experience it is the bearings and seals that give out way early and it is not related to the metal dust in the oil.
