My first ever harrowing project. This is my experimental pasture. I planted common bermuda. I spread 400# of lime, 200# of 10-10-10 and meant to sow 25# of bermuda seed, but wound up using the whole 50# bag on about a half acre field. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif . I've got to get a better spreader.

How do you guys spread bermuda seed? This stuff is expensive and I don't want to use anymore than is required. I'll be seeding 6 acres in the not-too-distant future and I want to get it right.

Here's a few photo's:

Nice looking rig.

In my farmer days, we'd disk maybe twice, wait for a good rain to settle the ground, let it dry, then disk it again. Then ready to plant.

Best wishes,
ron

Didn't get any photos of the actual seeding, but what I did was smooth the field with my box blade after harrowing in the fertilizer and lime. Then I seeded the field and covered the seed by dragging an old gate with a log chained to the top.

Here are some photos of the result a week later after 3 gully-washing, frog-choking thunder storms:

Last one for now. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be posting photos of lush green bermuda.

That field looks like it worked up real good and you did a good job.

Will the lush green in two weeks be just on the ½ acre?

Or did you find a way to seed the other acres, per your first post in the thread? Or maybe this field you are showing is just the ½ acre.

I remember my father broadcast seeding 5 acres into oats with alfalfa and some very expensive ladino clover. The little bag of ladino was gone from the small-seed 'bin' after about 20 feet. Needless to say, it wasn't set right and my father was none too happy (that was about 1951 /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif )

Thanks for the pics.

Lovely photo's.
oooodeeeee that's a nice big tractor. I want one too.
And you are correct sir, some drizzly rain would be nice instead of gully washers. We are a bit on the dry side here at the moment. It hasn't rained at the ponderosa in quite a while, since before July 19 for sure, I have stuff piled up for burning since at least then.
Your place is looking nice. Good luck with your grass.
I however, am firmly resolved that those who fertilize and water get exactly what they deserve, cutting the grass twice a week. 'Cause I can't be jealous without showing it.
Have you ever thought about wildflower mix?
Honestly I do like the smell of cut grass, more so though than the missus likes to cut it. Ah ha. My dogs love to run and jump in the wildflowers and my only purpose in life is to keep them and the missus happy.
You are a lucky man indeed with that much land to oversee.
All the best,
less fortunate Martin
