Interesting ... and darn scary, especially since there in no outside indication of what is happening inside the tire.

Had a dragging brake on a mini van. The wheel assembly was so hot, I dashed into the house for a pot of water to cool the wheel. Definitely smelled hot rubber. I was afraid of a fire. Didn't consider tire blowing off.

It's been awhile since that video was last posted and it's a good thing you brought it to everyone's attention again, Mike. There's always people who have never been exposed to the dangers of pyrolysis in tires and it's a good refresher for those who have. :thumbsup:

A friend of my son's was staying with us last week after coming into town to visit my son and also hang out with a girl that we go to church with. The girl's ex-boyfriend decided to throw a military smoke grenade into the open window of the guy's car. (Don't know where he got that.) Of course, the car caught fire and burned up. The cops were trying to keep everyone away from it but the stupid woman who had parked behind him got in her car and tried to drive around it. As she passed it, the rear tire blew and the rim smacked into the rear passenger side door putting a pretty bad dent in it.
(It's sad what happened but the funniest part of this mess was the girl, when she found out it was her ex that had started all this ran up to him and punched him in the face and laid him out on the sidewalk. The boy himself already had 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his arms and chest where he tried to reach back in the vehicle and remove the ordinance after it had started the fire. These are 16-18 yr. olds BTW...)

Very interesting and informational video. For over 35 years I have been very aware of the risk of over heated brakes and tires with aircraft. Never heard the term pyrolysis and never heard of a 22 hour delay before blowing. Always been told to never approach a hot brake/tire from the side but from the rear instead and the video demos very well why. Even with fans on a hot brake fuse plugs will often blow after 30-40 minutes.

That is a shame that nice car was burned up because of a "thoughtless prank" by a thoughtless person.. Of course what was the expected result of throwing a smoke grenade in a car? Even if it hadn't caught fire, it would have been ruined from the smoke alone..I have never understood this type of "thinking".
