I've read countless posts on changing oils, types of hydraulic fluids, bleeding of systems...etc.

I have a MF 471 2wd, shuttle 8x8, no cab, with a 1060 FEL and a MF backhoe (not sure of model). I blew a metal line on the FEL and have the part ordered. I plan to change the fluid and the filters and check the screen when I replace the line.

The manual is a little help, but the picture are really hard to follow. I think i have the procedure down from the book. However reading posts confuses me some.

From what I understand...the same fluid is used and circulates through the 3 point lift, transmission, FEL and any other hydraulic attachments. Is that correct?

Also, are there any extra things I should do like replace gaskets or O-rings. The manual doesn't really show the place to bleed the system either so if anyone knows where that might be that would really help.

I'm new at this...obviously.

Thanks,

Abe

As far as the fluid goes the majority of tractors run what is known as a common sump system. One fluid in a common sump is used for hydraulics, transmission, wet brakes, wet clutch, etc... UTF fluids (universal tractor/transmission fluid) is a cross between hydraulic oil and gear oil, kind of where the name "universal" comes in.

Not knowing what the fittings are on the end of the line you are replacing I'm not sure what type they are. If they do have o-rings I would replace them, if they do not use o-rings like a 37 deg. JIC fitting then there's nothing to worry about. Once it is replaced just cycle your controls a couple of times and that should purge any air out of the system.

Thanks for your response and the education.
I guess not understanding the fluid is what confused me. I didn't know gear lube and hydraulic oil could be combined. That makes a whole lot more sense. Do I need to loosen a plug of any kind to bleed air through?
