Do NOT plant everything the same day. It is very easy to do with one of the push type planters.

Then everything comes in at the same time.

Corn,

Green beans,

Purple hull peas,

Black eyed peas,

Cucumbers (for pickles),

and more corn.

Twelve to fourteen hour days.

I will know better next year.

A very tired RSKY.

Back when I truck farmed, we planted small [1/2 acre] plots of peas every 21 days. That way the next plot would be coming in just as one was playing out. And it was small enough you could pick it late in the day, so you could do the hard work of truck farming, selling the d**n mess, the next morning.

But you need to call in the neighbors, the in laws, or just some people you see driving by slow. Flag them down and tell them they can pick on halves.

Gardening is a learning experience from one year to the next. You are correct in not planting all at the same time. Spread it out and if you live in an area that can have overwintering crops, you should be getting ready for the fall now.

I plant only about 1/2 of my garden on startup, then add to it through the summer. The only exception is that I do plant 90% of my tomatoes at the same time so that once I start canning, I can keep going until I've got all my canning done. I plant small quantities of tomatoes later on for late maters.

We have many family that will help if their gardens aren't coming in at the same time. I knew better but it's been years since I had more than a few squash and tomato plants and I will do better next year.

I never did plant everything on the same day. In fact, I planted my garden by using the schedule in The Old Farmer's Almanac. I don't know whether that was any better way than other methods, although I've known people who put a lot of confidence in it, and I did have a very nice garden.

I almost always plant the spring garden in one day and the summer garden on another day. Never had a problem. This week we are picking green beans, picked half the patch and have canned about 75 qt. Everything else is just starting or not ready yet. It would be a lot of work if it all came in at the same time.

A lot of the time for beans and lettuce, I will plant over a couple of weeks, so that I can extend the season.
