I have a friend who is working on a 2166 C/C. The engine cranks, but runs as if it is flooding. If one covers the mouth of the carb with his forfinger, it smooths out and runs quite decent. Any ideas of what kind of problem this 16 hp Kholer has?

I also own a 2166, thus the arousal of my curosity.

Thanks,

Does pulling the choke out a bit smooth it out? If so, my guess is a clogged jet in the carb. At least that was the problem and solution on my Briggs Vanguard. I'd try Seafoam first. In my case, I needed to rebuild kit.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, pulling the choke out doesn't seem to have any effect, it is already puffing black smoke as if flooding. He, nor I, am sure what the partial covering of the throat of the carb has to do with anything, but it does. He is thinking valves, or cam shaft now. ???

Do a compression test. It is an interesting situation. Does adjusting the high speed or idle screws make it act different? Make sure carb is not leaking air at any gasket.

The friend who is involved with this is a retired man who works on mowers, and has for years. He is in bad health now and is not able to do major repairs. He says he is trying to get in touch with the owner and have him pick it up. I am going to try and buy the machine from the owner. If I can buy it cheap enough, it would be worth a lot for parts as time goes on. If this happens, I will get back with the board and let you know what I find out. Thanks for your interest, and replies.

I have owned lots of Cub Cadets over the years. A 106, that I bought used and mowed with for years, and a 109 that I bought, thinking my son would want. A couple more that I bought, repaired, and sold, that I don't remember the numbers. The last one I bought new was a little 1320 that I used for 13 years before selling it to my neighbor. All had Kholer engines.

I aquired another house, with an extra lot (more grass) so I bought a larger mower. For some unkown reason, I went with a Snapper tractor. It is a LT200 (22 hp, 50" deck). It mows pretty, but is not tough enough.

Just a little rambling to let folks know something about another newby.

That doesn't make any sense since choking does basically the same thing. If it does run with a 'richer' mixture, you might have a carb problem or a tank full of bad gas.

Exactly the point my friend made when telling me about this. I have been pondering this a lot. I have decided the problem is a clogged fuel line coming from a tank of bad gas. He already looked into the carb. He says it was clean, and suspects someone else has already been into it. Suppose the tank has bad gas, causing it to run rough. A clogged fuel line is preventing the proper amount of fuel. When partially covering the mouth of the carb, of course it cuts down on the amount of air, causing the mixture to be closer to correct. ???? Any takers?

Thanks for listening and chiming in with your ideas.
