We've been storing this piece of equipment in an old barn for nearly 30 years and we're not sure what it is or if it's worth anything to anyone. Anyone know what it's used for, how old it is, if it's worth saving, or how it was powered? So far we've only been told that it's some kind of fruit sorting machine. Any information would be appreciated.

It definitely looks like a sorting machine that grades for size. I grew up grading potatoes in the winter & that looks similar to what we used.

Looks like an apple grader to me and you are in apple country. I think the only difference between the apple and potato graders was the different shaped hole.

Apple grader was going to be my guess

Don't scrap it or trash it . If I was closer I would take it off your hands .

Thanks for all the feedback and the link. The barn sits on an old apple farm near Lake Ontario so it would make sense that it was an apple grader. I wish I could drop it in the mail to you, fordman. We have no use for it but we'll see if we can find a farm market nearby that's interested in using it for a display or something. It's so old and still in such good shape for its age that I could never scrap it. We'll find a home for it somehow.

Not sure if you are in Niagara or Orleans county but there is a place at Point Breeze called Browns Berry Patch that might take it off your hands. They have all kinds of antique equipment, sell all kinds of fruits and vegetables and have tours for the kids. Looks like it's in good enough shape they could make it into a really nice display.

A little OT, but I really like your avatar!

At first glance it appeared to me to be a crude sizing conveyor, but doesn't have enough slack on the underside to accommodate the 'undersized' product. I'd agree with the others that it was probably used as a short grading conveyor for apples. Looks like it would be conducive to bruising tho...?

From stuff I've seen in this area, I agree, apple and or potato size, grade belt....

I bet there is a steam/old machinery club close that would appreciate a donation like that....
Bet you would also get a free gate pass for there events....

Good luck

I wish I had a place for it. I'd love to have that old piece of equipment.

Strangely enough, my wife and I had that very same idea. We've been there before and it's not far from the barn. Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe they'll trade for an ice cream cone.

By the way, this may be a stupid question but what is an avatar?
