Use and Take care of but don't own:( Ford 4600 Kubota L245 and International 250
I just found ouy yesterday that the Kubota at school (one of my adopted tractors) might not come back from the shop. The little #@$%*^ abuse all of my adopted tractors/w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif and they usually break something relativly small, like a starter or a head light, but now they done and did it they broke the steering on by destroying the steering box and actually cracking the saft (how they did that I don't know). The main problem is that none of the dealers or repair shops in the area want to touch it. Is this because it has manual steering? The good news is we might get a new medium sized tracto to replace it when we get the brand spanking new 60-70hp range John Deere. It still is sad because that tractor is the newest of the three of them, but it is the one used to teach the 9th graders how to drive a tractor, frankly I think they should give a pretest to see if your competant enough to drive a tractor, because half the kids din't know the [censored] from a hole in the ground/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif well sorry for the rant.

does the school have a mechanics class if so see if they will fix it. or maybe they can start a repair class on the side, it sure is nice when you can fix your own equipment. better yet have the kids that use them fix them as part of the program they may treat them better while using them.

Won't fix it because it is manual steering?! I would rather do the manual steering repair than the hydraulic! Are there any other dealers near by that can look at it? Have you found out what an entire assy. may cost? You could throw it on yourself. I can find out cost if you give me the model. Might break down by serial number also. Let me know, perhaps you will be able to bring home your adoption.

smthng2do,
Thanks for your idea. About checking with other dealers there is only one in the area plus with school we can only go to places the state has contracts with./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif If you could get me the cost of the steering components that would be great./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif It is an L245 high clerance row crop tractor. It is 2wd. If you need serial number just tell me I will be working at school all day tommorrow and I will talk to my Ag teacher about maybe being able to keep the tractor if I pay to fix it. And if he says yes then I can get a loan to fix it then buy a used bushhog and bushhog for money/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Thanks all.

There are two sterring assy.s for that unit. They may both cross reference to the same unit, but I don't have that info with me. The entire assy. for both though is about 500 bucks. Now, you tell me, is it more economical to replace an entire tractor, or invest another 500 bucks to keep a great old tractor in the pasture?!
