This may seem like a silly question, but here goes:

On my L3130 HST, should I be pushing in the clutch pedal before engaging the PTO? My manual refers to the PTO lever as a PTO clutch but does not mention using the clutch peddle in concert with it.

Excuse my inexperience.

I don't clutch, and I'm in neutral when I engage the mower. I have the GST. I just ease the PTO lever forward until it engages and then ease it on into the lock, then run up the rpm. Just move it back to disengage, don't ease it off.

At least that's what the dealer said, and it's worked great so far.

I don't see where clutching would matter, just have it in the right gear after your PTO hits 540 rpm. You could go for a ride! Not that I have done that.. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I'm kind of a new owner too, just have 27 hours on it.

I've only used the PTO on my L3430HST a few times, and as I recall, depressing the clutch pedal is necessary when dis/engaging.

You use the clutch on the Grand L series only on starting. To activate the PTO I usually throttle back to 12-1500 rpm, engage the PTO lever smoothly and throttle up to just over 2600 rpm. To disengage I slow down engine rpm then sharply move the lever back. I don't think that it will necessarily harm anything to disengage at speed but perhaps a little less shock to reduce engine rpm. If I need to I will disengage at speed.

Swampthing you have it exactly right… /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Feather it in using control lever with engine RPM low, and then bring up to 540 RPM. To disengage no need for the clutch… KennyV.

I have a 4310 GST and my FIL has a 4310 HST I dont have to use the foot clutch to engage or disengage the PTO . He HAS to use the foot clutch to engage it but not to disengage it. Same tractor except HST vs GST.
