Today I had to use my gc2310 to put my 11 year old best friend to rest. He got sick around thanksgiving. We had him at the vet 3 times and the blood results that came back were very bad. My family and I didnt want him to suffer any more. He was a little boston terrier, the best dog we have ever had. Now he is in a better place. Tonight will be very hard for me and the wife. He has sleeped in our bed from day one.

Sorry for your loss, I know the feeling. I just had the 9th anniversary of the same deal. :(

Everyone says get another one right away, it helps get you through it. I wanted to. But, I could not go through that again.

Yep, I know how it feels and I'm like you. I just did not want to go through that again, but my wife wanted another dog, and since the old gal is undoubtedly the best thing that ever happened to me, I had to let her have one. So for almost 3 years now, we've had a Chihuahua.

Most of the time, this Chihuahua sleeps burrowed into a quilt in her crate, but sometimes she decides she wants in bed with me, so she'll jump against the side of the bed to wake me up to lift her onto the bed and she dives under the covers, goes down about my knees, and curls up there to sleep.

I also share your grief; it's tough. We lost our cat of 15 years just before school started this fall.

She used to come running whenever we brought meat home from the market; the paper they use to wrap the meat makes a particular noise as it's crinkled and she'd come to see if there were any snacks available (yeah, she was pretty spoiled).

A week or two after the cat was gone, I was unwrapping a piece of meat for supper; the sound that paper almost made me and my daughter both break down. We now have 2 new kittens, but it's still tough.

My condolences as well. We did the same two years ago and it killed me. However, as I write this, a 5-1/2 month old chocolate lab puppy just greeted my son like she had never seen him before! She has to be Max (Black Lab)reincarnated as she is darn near perfect. It will always be tough, but I can highly recommend a stand-in... (replacement is too tough a word)

Thanks everybody for the replies. They mean a lot at times like this. This is the first time my family has had to deal with a lost that was so close. We have had other pets, like hamster, mice, and such but there is nothing like a dog. They give you unconditional love everyday. No matter what kind of day you have they always make it better.

Sorry about your loss. I also lost my best friend a couple years back. I had a bull mastiff and she got really sick. Turns out her organs were failing, so I had to make the decisionn to put her down. Hardest thing I ever had to do, but didn't want to see her suffering.
On the bright side, maybe you'll be blessed with a new friend. A strange thing happened to me not long after my loss. That winter a cat showed up on my doorstep. It was really skinny, almost starving. So we took it in, got it healthy and put put adds up, saying we found it. No one ever claimed it, so we've had it ever since. Call me crazy, but the ironic part is, it is the exact same colour my dog was, it was fully house trained, and does all the same things my dog used to do. Like begging off me when I eat supper. And it only likes what my dog did? I keep joking to the wife that it is my dog reincarnated.

Thanks for sharing mpegg.

We pet lovers can all relate. I know you didn't say it but just in case, don't let the short term pain and sadness put you off the joy of long term pet ownership. For many years I never had a dog because I was too upset when they would eventually die. My wife made us get dogs again and I think her to this day. They are so fun and loving, in the long run the happy memories will outweigh the sad feelings you have now.

If you can, get another dog when you are ready - or two!
