One of my client's well simply gave up supplying water.
Well was proper artisan installation about 40 years old but simply gave up. Local dynamite work was partially suspect.
I contacted many drillers and they all wanted to drill a brand new well giving all sorts of reasons all of which would cause considerable additional costs like excavation being a serious concern considering stone walls and other landscaping features.
The winter snow accumulation also needed to be taken into consideration as well as frozen ground.
Typical quotations ran above $12K until I located this one chap.
The common excuse was that re-drilling was a big risk to damaging their expensive drill bits.
Using a reference from my pump supplier and my gut feeling I selected one chap that offered a few excellent ideas.
His quote was to be about $5-6k 'depending' on a few things like hydro fracture and naturally footage. All fair and understood.
His tactic was to use his older bit that was somewhat warn out so that it could not get jammed in the existing pipe.
He needed to thaw the ground (about 1 hr) to remove the lid, drilled down an additional 140 ft installed our new pump, wires hose etc, re sealed and tested everything to our satisfaction. His tests were that we had 100-120 GPH.
Most drillers wanted to immediately come to sign a contract, this guy actually simply gave a handshake.
When he declared that we had a successful well I asked "How much are we at?" (still another 1 1/2 hr to go)
The answer was $3200.
He skipped the hydro fracture step as our supply was adequate as well as we now had an additional 140 ft of reserve.
All I can is that is just just so nice to deal with an honest person.
The whole experience was a most pleasant one for me and my clients. In fact we all were joking and kidding along during the whole process.
We also lucked out in that the government delayed the highway spring thaw regulations thereby allowing him to bring in his heavy equipment.
Not only that but in as I get contractor discounts he did not get upset that we supplied all the materials.
