Some time back we had a discussion of gates, chains, locks and the best way to slow up amateur thieves. I know that cordless angle grinders will get thru almost any material but I remember someone posting a link to the best chain and lock with strength to require quite some work to cut thru.

Anyone remember the link? Or what do you think is the best chain and lock? I am willing to put a little money into it to lock some materials around my hunting camp. I have decided the only way I can have game cameras is to put them high and out of site. But then I will need a ladder around to check them. And a ladder is one of the items stolen at my place over the last year.

Hmm...

I always used Kryptonite brand of locks to secure my Harleys. Have a U lock, the 5/8 braided cable and the "killer" disc lock...boy don't ever forget to remove that one before you take off!

At one time they were all supposed to hold up against bolt cutters, files, hacksaws, and hammering but like you said cordless grinders have changed the game

I had an big cylindrical ABUS lock years ago too

HD also markets Amorlinks, none of this stuff is cheap though.

3/8 logging chain and a huge padlock are always pretty common items. :D

I'll be interested in the others suggestions too.

Take the ladder off premises, and bring it back to check the cameras. Nothing will keep determined thieves with grinders and no one around =(time), from getting what they came for.:confused3::thumbdown:

Any chain and lock that has flat hexagonal walls will be harder to cut with bolt cutters due to more surface area and higher psi required to cut it. But it's always more expensive. .

There is super hard chain available but the cost is so high I'm not sure it's worth it.

It's impossible to stop determined thieves but motion lights are helpful and if remote location that and a sound device motion triggered is good too. A blip from a car alarm siren with a light is highly effective. With solar panels and a battery it's pretty easy to do.

There is a gate not far from me that I looked at several years ago that, as far as I remember, would be hard cut open. The part I do remember was that the lock was in a piece of pipe that was welded to the gate or post and the lock itself was only accessible from the bottom. Possibly the lock went thru holes in plates attached to the post and gate. Not sure. Next time in the area I'll check it out.

Ill second Bosnianbills YT channel. The man knows his locks... and has a well deserved hatred for Masterlock

After several hours watching his channel, if I had something I wanted to protect Id be looking at one of the Euro locks, like a MulTlock or Abus. There are hardened hex chains available from companies like Abus or Pewag. Pewag is primarily a tire chain company that made their mark in mining tire protection. Of course the angle grinder can cut even the toughest chain or lock if given enough time.

Many of the forestry swing gates have shrouded padlock hasps. The gate swings into a piece of heavywall rectangular tube. You reach up inside the rect tube and apply the padlock. This keeps the padlock away from grinders (rect tube will add another layer to cut and remove before getting to the lock) and keeps the padlock out of the weather. Of course the thief can just target the tube of the gate... but there is always a weak link. If I had to have a secure gate on a property this is the route Id go, Forest gate with multilock, and mount a gamecam up in a tree watching. At least if you slow him down at the gate, there is a better chance the camera will catch something that can be used against him the longer hes there trying to defeat it.

This is a deluxe version, most here omit the part under the main crossbar.

You just need a chain big enough a cordless grinder on one battery can't cut it.

That's a big chain.
But really you're just trying to stop thieves of opportunity. A gate will easily rip off if you tie it to your hitch. You want deterrent and big chains work well.
