AC power from BX

I noticed that one of the new JD models has a neat feature- an AC outlet for running drill, hedge trimmers, etc when in a remote location.

Does anyone have advise on how to do this on a BX? Can you get a cigarette lighter for the BX? and then use a simple inverter? Or is there other inventive, more permanent, safe, astheitic, ways to do it.

Just looking for another project.

The only one I can think of that meets most of your requirements is to quit smoking.

Yep. Any RV store, most auto parts places, even Wal-Mart has inverters. Hook to the battery and you have AC.

Remember the wattage and keep the tractor running to keep the battery charging.

To little power causes more damage to appliances/tools than nearly anything else.

Jim just use a cheap inverter that will wire directly to your battery or use a cigarette lighter version. radio shack or any autoparts store can supply a lighter/pwr receptacle.

Seems if you do a search on "work lights" or "cigarette lighter" youll find all kinds of good threads on this and similar subjects. Really seems to beg the question what you want that power for. Cordless drills and gas trimmers and the like certainly spring to mind fast. Im sure that it would be cheaper and easier than playing with the wiring on the tractor too.

Cordless drills are quite good these days. But gas trimmers are pretty heavy 10 pounds or more. Cordless trimmers are kind of weak and don't last too long.

I wonder how big an inverter (in watts) you can safely run off the BX. In other words how much spare capacity in the alternator.

Short of getting a PTO generator, it would be nice to have a couple hundred watts off the alternator.

Remember, the battery capacity also comes into play. Good inverters are not inexpensive.

you shouldn't have a problem with an inverter plugged into a power outlet, I mounted one for my sprayer, if you look closely to the right of the tool box, it's weather proof although i don't leave it outside.

Please put a 10 to 15 amp fuse or circuit breaker between your batttery and 12v outlet if you haven't already done so. I have seen both ruined equipment and batteries from using unfused outlets when getting a short. If you are pulling more than 10 amps off a cigarette plug type adapter you really should think about moving up to a beefier direct hookup.
