Some of oyu will remember me, my husband and I bought an olie farm in Provence France and I asked a lot of tractor questions earlier in the year. So far he has not had a tractor accident.

As soon as we get the money we would like to get a Utility Vehicle. Our farm is only 12 acres but at les 50% is terraced and it is really dangerous with the tractors we have to get around on the hillside terraces.
In reading the RTV9000 review on line in ATV Illustrated magazine Kubots plans on having some accessories work off the hydrolics on hte RTV9000. I have been searching the internet and don't find any tools, implements so far that are to work with the RTV9000. Of particular interest to me is a chainsaw that runs off of the hydrolics (I know I am spelling tht word wrong) of the RTV9000.

We are at a disadvange not being mechanically inclined in that we cna't fix anything ourselves and a chainsaw that worked off of hydrolics shoul probably be lightweight and powerfull. We have a big heavy chainsaw, d*mn thing must weigh 2 25lbs, a McCullough. We took it in twice and it still doesn't work. Actually my husband is cutting down lots of small oak trees (6" - 10" in diameter) but they are growning on the edges of terraces and slopes and the big heavy chainsaw on the edge of the terraces was rather dangerous anyway, he had no safe footing trying to run a dangerous piece of equipment. Bottom line is he cuts down all these trees by hand. Being the loving wife that I am I got him a really good small handsaw type of thing, cost me 40 Euros, and he cuts down the trees by hand and then saws them up into firewood. So I am really interested about a hydrolic driven chain saw.

Also can anyone give advice on the best way to cut up small trees into firewood? He just bends over all day sawing. I said I would build him a stand, perhaps something out of 2 by 4's maybe make a 2 big X's and then he could lay the tree trunks in there and saw standing upright.
The farm life is quite nice, my husband has lost probably 25lbs and me probably 5lbs. I have to admit it is all we dreamed it would be. Now the only thing left is to sell that olive oil so that we can buy a Utility Vehicle. I'm thinking Kubota because they are the only one with external hydrolics (again SP) and also to get us around these hills.
Sorry if my post is long, hey I'm a woman and felt chatty tonight. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

rox,

Welcome back. Hope the tractor is doing well and you're both getting used to driving it on hills.

Reading through your post, it honestly sounds to me like you just need a new chainsaw. A new small Stihl or Husqvarna would make easy work out of those trees. I too have a big saw but for stuff like you have, I have a small saw. It only weighs about 7 or 8 pounds. Very easy to work with.

A hydraulically connected saw may be cumborsome. You're constrained as to where you can go and always have to deal with dragging hoses. Possible tripping hazard as well. I'm also going to assume it would be very expensive. I checked the weight on the first link Lloyd provided and they're about the same weight as the saw I use. Click here to see the saw I have. Granted, this particular model is for a professional arborist but I chose it mainly for the light weight. That same site has consumer saws but they're a little heavier.

As for techniques for cutting the trees into firewood:
I have made some of those X things out of 2x4's that you mentioned. They do work fine but if working alone it's a slow process. It is best to have one person feed the log while the other does the cutting when using these.
Personally, I leave the log on the ground, cut as far as I can through the log (without going through and hitting dirt or rocks) then roll the log over and cut the back side.
Smaller diameter trees are a little harder to deal with. The log may want to roll itself over when the chain starts the cut. The longer the log, the less tendency it'll have to do this.

Right on! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There will be RTV900 EU's headed to Europe in the near future (namely in the UK) & AU models for the land down under.

Hello,
You can get a hydraulic chainsaw at Stanley Hydraulic Tools. They sell for $1500US and work real well. They are restricted to the length of the hydraulic hoses but will always start. The RTV needs a hydraulic cooling system that I believe they are working on.

Good Luck

Yep...you've done your homework! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif It will probably be later this year when the cooling system is ready.

Do you think the cooler will be offered to retrofit the existing RTV's or will be a factory option for new ones only?

I imagine it will be available as retrofit kit and standard on turf models sooner or later.

I have had my RTV900W, s/n 17992 for over 18 months. It has the Hyd. Bed Lift and all is working great.

What parts/upgrades if any do I need to use the Hyd. tools that are now available.

Thank for any info
