We just had a man die at 7:00 am this morning. He was pushing sand at a gravel pit, on a dozer, when the edge of the pit crumbled. The dozer and driver went into the water filled pit and the driver drowned. The man was an experienced operator. This can happen to the best of us, so be careful out there and watch the edges of those embankments and pits!

I didn't know him personally, I just responded to the scene. It took the divers 45 minutes to recover the body. I hate my job at times like these! Thanks for the concern Harv!

Dozernut,
Hate to hear of something so tragic, but we all need to be aware of what we're doing. Work or at home "playing".
God be with Him

I work in the steel mills around North America. So many things are waiting to hurt, mame, or kill me if I don't watch what is happening around me. But yet I come home and jump right on a machine that could kill just as easily.

Don't we all become complacent about our big toys. These things can change our lives, and our families lives, faster than we think.

Remember also, the horsepower rating was devised, although somewhat arbitrary, on the work a horse could do. It only takes one horse to mame or kill. I ride a 29 Hp machine. I'd better be careful! So should we all.

May the family know The comfort; but it is up to you to provide it. Go to them once the hub bub is over.

Thanks to all who replied, but I think that I may have unintentionally mislead you. Bad syntax and not paying attention in english class are the cause. This was not an employee of mine, I am one of those "lucky" people who has to respond and investigate these tragedies. I apologise If you got the wrong impression, this was not deliberate, just poor word skills.

...I am one of those "lucky" people who has to respond and investigate these tragedies.

I met a guy the other day whose job it was to investigate every child death related to school buses in the entire country. NTSI guy. Actually, he taught a class I took on driver safety, and he was very good. I have to confess, I went in thinking I'd lower my insurance rates a bit.. but I honestly, in my arrogance, didn't think I would learn anything. I did.

Here's one thing that may help somebody, someday.. although most of you probably already know this. I had never thought of it. If you are waiting to make a left turn off a road, keep your front wheels pointed straight ahead until you get your chance to go.

Anyway, your job, and his, must be a rough one at times. My best to you, and my condolences to all who are suffering now.

Bob

I am very sorry to hear of another tragedy like this. I would hate to have to be involved in any aspect of this, including the divers, the investigators, the police, etc.

I think that the best thing we can gain from this kind of tragedy in an increased sense of awareness as to the very real dangers we face working with machinery.

****If you are waiting to make a left turn off a road, keep your front wheels pointed straight ahead until you get your chance to go.****

Bob,

It's funny (actually, not so funny) how many people violate that common sense "rule" all for the sake of saving about 2 seconds of time.

For those that don't know why you don't turn your wheels until your actually executing the turn...it's so that if the person behind you is d.w.h.u.a. and he rear-ends you the crash will not propell you left in to on-coming traffic.

Here's another one: when stopped waiting at a light leave enough space between you and the car ahead of you so that you can escape the same d.w.h.u.a. driver. Better to have him hit the vehicle in front of you than to hit you. Obviously, prior to making any escape you would have to take into account other vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
