In construction during my 40+ year career with Brown & Root we used Mappgas(propylene) on a couple of projects back in the mid to late 70's due to inadequate supplies of acetylene but then went back to acetylene. It was cheaper but any savings was eliminated by extra labor needed to clean up the cut before welding. Some of this was likely due to lack of knowlege on how to properly use it for folks who had always used acetylene. After that, we never used it on our construction sites again.
For salvage work, Mappgas would be cheapest way to go. For my uses, I stick to acetylene as I have only used 1 tank in 2 years and 4 bottles of oxygen. I just recently got my bottles all refilled (1 acetylene & 2 oxygen + a new cutting rig for $230)
