Toolcat B series
Just installed a new urethane cutting edge on my plow and thought I'd test it out. Here are some action pics!

Dylan,

Looks like a good setup there. What are the benefits of using the urethane cutting edge?

Now that you have had some time with the Toolcat in the snow what is your impression? How is the back drag working on the blower?

When you get packed frozen ice how do you get it off the parking lot?:D

Egon, During a serious winter in Ottawa parking lots don't neccesarily get scraped bare. Just smooth and then spread sand to keep things safe. This year we don't have those issues.
I'm glad you got out there before it all melted Dylan.

Dylan,

It looks like you are not having a real winter either....

That snow looks like our last storm...just like a "blended" drink...LOL.

timm9, just like you, both our "snow storms" have been 2" of slop. Not much fun.

Tig, I'm glad i got out too. I've been trying to train new drivers. Maybe I don't need new drivers? Does anyone want to buy six tractors and snowblowers?

Egon, I rarely use the plow. Only when the snowblower breaks or the snow is too wet and slushy to blow. The urethane edge excels in these conditions. Most of my lots are pre treated anyway so the ice just peels right up. I also have a bucket, snowblower and ice scraper for really hard packed stuff. The plow also has a steel back drag that i could use.

dsb, the urethane edge acts like a squeegie to push wet snow and water better. quite a few guys are using it now. It cleans pretty good. It also bumps or flexes over edges and manholes so the plow does not trip. Easier on me and the toolcat. it is also much quietier than a steel blade.
I really like the toolcat in snow.. Much more than my John Deere tractors. it is smaller, quietier and much more nimble. I don't know if it is much faster than the tractors but it is easier and more fun to drive and does a really neat job.
The back drag onthe blower is a MUST have. I would be lost without it. It really cleans the driveway and leaves nothing behind.

Did I get everyone?
Cheers Dylan

Can you angle your blade with the side plates on it, or are limited to just pushing straight ahead. I like having the side plates so you can push without spilling out the ends, but concerned that I would not be able to use the angle feature with the side plates.

thanks

Yes you can angle the plow with the plates on. Some snow does spill off the plate because it is now at an angle to the direction of travel but I just get that bit on the next pass. You can really hold a lot more snow with the plates. I don't do much windrowing with the plow so the plates are much more productive for pushing piles of snow from a to b.

How do you "pre treat" your lots?

I usually use salt or ice melter the day before the storm. I'm considering a liquid system as I already have the tank and pump but have not gotten around to it yet.

thanks dylan

Is there a web site that shows the liquid system you refer to?

Try searching for "liquid de-icers"
or go to plowsite.com and search there. They have a whole section on de-icing with pics and links.

Are they as harmful as salt to machine and road surfaces?

new formulations much less corrosive than any salt subtance

new formulations avail with low phosphorus - the main cause of runoff polution to waterways (result of a NY EPA report)

i ordered the bobcat 75gallon sprayer and the 10ft boom (much cheaper) off the 50 gallon sprayer. will fabricat a custom hitch attachment. bobcat authorizes use of de-icers in the sprayer. only question is: will i need to use any salt also? the main selling point of de-icers is that when mixed with salt they reduce the amount of salt needed by more than the cost of the de-icer, they lower the temperature of effectiveness of the salt, and they help the salt bind to the road. the counties here are constantly salting - all winter long - you can see the liquid de-icer tanks on the backs of the trucks. will use the sprayer in the summer also.
hopefully the deicer will be all i need to get rid of the ice with the broom. i have had very good luck with my broom so far this winter.
