Greetings All - I need the group input on this.... I have a JD 1070 and purchased a used rotary brush cutter today. The drive shaft on the brusher has a male spline and the PTO on the tractor has a different (larger, wider spacing) male spline. Is there an adapter on the market that will allow these two male splines to match up? Thanks for any and all input!

There are adapters for converting a 21 or 15 spline to the 6 spline 540 rpm pto of your (and mine) 1070 tractor. However, before you get started check to see if the gearbox input to output ratio is something other than about 1:1. You could have on your hands a cutter that was driven by a 1000 rpm pto speed which is available on several models of older and new tractors. If so, the blade speed will be too slow to satisfy your mowing requirments. Its either get a replacement gearbox from a similar cutter or, if you are lucky, a new gear set for your current gearbox. And you will need that adapter or a new prop shaft.

So after a bit of internet searching, I think I am coming to the conclusion that even if I had an adapter, my 6 spline 540 rpm PTO and the 15 spline shaft (1000 rpm?) from the mower will not work very well. Another valuable lesson learned!

@zzvyb6... I did the gear box ratio test... one shaft rotation gets you about 2/3 mower blades rotation (1 : 0.666), so it looks as if you are correct about the 15 spline shaft running at a higher PTO rpm. I was also able to find a painted over Danco decal and found that it is mid-70s vintage. I think I will part with this unit and find one that better suits my 1070.

Late reply, but the 6-spline is a 540pto, the 15-spline is a 2000pto, and the 21-spline is the 1000pto. I would be interested in the brush-cutter model you bought though!-Joe
