I was wondering if anyone had ever tried to add-on an extra hydraulic pump to a CTL to make a closed loop for a mulcher head? It might not be feasible but could it be done?

I would think a dedicated high flow pump from Gehl would be the better solution. If by closed loop you mean hydraulic oil run directly from pump to motor and back to the pump, you will find heat to be your enemy. High Flow systems use the reservoir and a dedicated oil cooler to disapate heat and even that is not alway enough when pulling hard and ambeint temperatures are high.

It appears that Gehl does not offer a hi flow pump for CTL60. The loftness guide lists 28 hydraulic HP for the CTL60 with standard flow.

Below is a guide from Loftness giving flows for different skid steers.

You could probably run a heavy bush hog, a tree saw or tree shear on your machine. I was a bit surprised that there were no hi flow options for the CTL60. The only hi flow option in the CTL series from Gehl appears to be the CTL80 at 70 hydraulic HP which would run about any attachment the machine would carry.

I have an old Case 1845C with high flow. It develops around 36 hydraulic HP. I run a tree saw and 72" brush cutter on it and am successful in doing a large amount of clearing by piling and burning the trees/brush.

Yes I would like to add a closed loop hydraulic system on a gehl ctl 80. The reason to move the hydraulics on the head would be to have better recovery time at the head. Also you would still be able tot move and lift you boom and tilt the mulcher. I would add another oil cooler and reservoir dedicated to that pump. pretty much I want to change a CTL to a full time track carrier.

I believe that is precisely what you would have with the factory hi flow. You will not lose any ability to raise lower the boom or use the curl. The CTL80 shows 70 hydraulic horse power. That is one of the highest rated hi flow. I'm not familiar with Gehl's system, but I am sure their system will use the regular system hydraulic reservoir and a cooler. There are add on oil coolers available but most need to be located on top of the canopy which would be out of the question for me due to low hanging obstuctions encountered during land clearing. The oil cooler on my little machine sits just behind the radiator.

I see absolutly no difference in the response of the loader controls when running my hi flow.

its mainly when we get a good bite on a tree with the loftness head. the CTL 80 we have seems to like to be knocked down. I'm just putting it out there seeing if anyone has experimented with adding another pump on these machines.

Is your present CTL80 a high flow machine???? The loftness resourse page lists the CTL80 standard flow at 37 hydraulic HP and the high flow model at 76 hydraulic HP. If you are already using a hiflow model, my opinion is you need to get a dedicated machine and not a skid track machine. I can't imagine 76 HP to an attachment not being enough. If I had that capability there would be no trees left in Kansas. I'm going to butt out now and maybe you can get some solution from someone who understands your problem better.

What do Gehl and Loftness recommend???

Yes sir it is a high flow machine and I don't disagree I need a dedicated carrier machine as well. I just wanted to see if having another pump to solely run the attachment would be worth while. From what you have said it sounds to me like it would not. thank you for the help

Contact your local dealer for recomended attachments are you may be buying more then one pump!! I've installed recomended attachments and coolers and reliefs, I have changed skidders to high flow and still had heat problems, the one thing i have learned in my lifetime is the engineer wants you to feild test his design, (@ your expense)!!

I would like to have seen this thread continue. I run a saw on a 60 HP hiflow skid steer. Mine only developes 36 hydraulic HP. My rig stalls hydraulically (opens the relief) before bringing the RPMS down very low and then it recovers very quickly. Probably has a lot to do with the weight of the cutting rotors on the respective machines as to recovery time. The Gehl CTL80 develops around 72-76 hydraulic HP and I'm sure it has a seperate hiflow pump. 70 +hydraulic Hp may be to big a % of the machines total capacity and causing it to draw down RPMS too much. I believe I would investigate hose sizing, quick connector sizing, and other options prior to giving up on a 70 + hydraulic HP machine.

Without a doubt a saw does not require the HP that a mulcher does but I would love to test a 70 hydraulic HP machine on my saw. I expect there would be fewer trees here in KS., if I had such a machine.
