This weekend I stopped over to the farm to pick corn to put up in the freezer , figured I would fill the FEL to save time and having to carry all the bags back to the truck .... Well got into the tractor barn and sat down to start her ,,,, no go ... not a click.... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Hmmmm
Go to the front of the tractor pull the front grill , touch the battery cable to the ground ..... very very loose .... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
When I saw the posts on the battery problems that have happened on other models I had the dealer check it out and clean up any leakage....
From what I can see the leakage that started was enough to eat through the no lead battery connectors on the top of the battery ...
A quick run to NAPPA for a new ground cable w/ lead termial and a replacement for the positive post side. To replace the ground cable you may want to get an extra hand to hold the nut under the batery pan , even with long arms it is a long reach and with a FEL on just about undoable . I was back up and running in 45 minutes /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Best part is the sweet corn later this winter will be real good ..... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think this is exactly the problem I had on my 990. After peppering TBN with queries and posts during the work-week, that Saturday I took someone's advice to carefully walk back through the entire battery and electrical systemt osee why she wasnt even cranking. I didn't have to "walk" far. When I removed the clamp to the positive post, and applied the brush to clean the clamp, it snapped in two---the only thing holding it together, I think, was the corrosion.

Fortunately, a friend was on his way over to my place, and was to be passing the JD dealer. I called him to have him stop for a new clamp. By the time he arrived, I had "amputated" the old clamp from the cable, peeled back about an inch worth of rubber from the cable, and was back up and running in short order.

Replacement was a little uncomfortable: I'm fortunate that I'm thin enough to be able to sit on the 430 bucket to work on the battery compartment. I did learn the hard way to wedge something in place to hold the front grill down: but even so, twice the thing snapped back up on my forearm.

I should mention this event happened at about 75 hours on the meter, about three weeks ago. I'm surpised to see that much corrosion on so new a rig and battery.

Hi

My 990 had the same problem. The positve connector was barely hanging on by the last thread of metal. I stripped the insulation and terminated with a new battery connector. I used the kind with a large solder pellet that you heat with a propane torch.

Then I cleaned out the compartment and applied a liberal dose of the red spray corrosion inhibitor.
