So I put a rear facing light on my rtv900 and wired it off my main headlight switch so it would be on with the lights, but it痴 on anytime the switch is on, yet the headlights work properly still with the switch.
There痴 only two tabs on my switch that are in use and I tried it hooked up on each, thinking one was 遡ey power and one 壮witched power, so I had a 50% chance of getting it.
I get the same results either way so I don稚 know what I am doing wrong to get this light to work off the switch.

If it is a LED light you need to run it from a relay so it will turn off.

yes it is an LED.
There is another prong on the switch that is not in use. Do you think that may work?
I guess I could just put an inline switch on the power cord going to it.
I'm not really familiar with what a relay setup would be, but right now I'm just unplugging it's power supply as needed.

You need a voltmeter or a test light to find out how it is wired.

So I put a rear facing light on my rtv900 and wired it off my main headlight switch so it would be on with the lights, but it痴 on anytime the switch is on, yet the headlights work properly still with the switch.

Your first sentence is confusing. I took the first "the switch is on" to mean the key switch and the second "the switch" to mean the headlight switch.

That is why I recommended the relay. When LED backup lights are added to a Polaris Ranger factory wiring, sometimes they don't go completely off when not in reverse.

sorry, that is confusing now that I re-read it.
Yes I meant when the key is on the rear light now comes on immediately, like before the engine even starts, basically as soon as I turn the key to the ACC position.
The headlights work properly though with the headlight switch, going on and off as needed. I could easily just put another inline switch in the line going to the rear light, I just wanted it to be a little cleaner and utilize the headlight switch since I would never really want to use the rear light anyway unless I was using the front lights too.
Basically I'm getting ready for plowing season where you go from forward to reverse 9 million times and I wanted some rear facing light if I'm stuck plowing in the dark.

I can bring a voltmeter home from work. I'll test all the prongs on that switch and see what voltage they have depending on switch position.

Some automotive headlights are 'ground switched'. The switch is on the ground side, not the hot side. This allows them to use different fuses/relays for high and low beams. So you still have one beam if the other goes out.

It's a pain when adding lights that need to be switched with the high (or low) beams but there are ways to deal with it.
