I was going to purchase a larger rotary mower but decided that there is nothing wrong with my 60” Land Pride except the shear pin is driving me nuts.
How big a job is it and how much cost should I reasonably expect incur in putting a clutch on the Land Pride rotary mower?
I appreciate your input!

You can pick up a somewhat universal slip clutch at Tractor Supply for under $90. It just goes on the end of your PTO shaft and could be adjust with bolts by tightening or loosening the plates.

Takes about 5-7 minutes to install, ~~ $79-95. cost for 2 plate slip-clutch ( 1 3/8" x 1 3/8" smooth/smooth)... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ah, what timing. I was looking at the slip clutches at TSC just last week, after cussing the latest sheared bolt on my cutter. Like most things at TSC, the clutches come with absolutely no documentation. Is there a generic "rule of thumb" on checking/setting the springs on clutches? The Owner's Manual on my Bush Hog PHD says the "initial setting" is with the springs compressed to 1.25", but who knows if that is a standard length for most/all clutches. And given the flakey things that I've found on new implements in the past, I'm very hesitant to assume that the clutches on the shelf at TSC are adjusted correctly.

I'd sure start out with the thing as "loose" as you can set it then tighten it according to what stops your attachment that you think shouldn't. It's trial and error for sure but I'd make sure I err'ed on the side of safety.

Good luck with this. Let us know how it works for you. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi,

I don't think there is a "correct" or "incorrect" setting... it will vary depending on the implement/tractor combo being used.

I have some charts kicking around on adjusting the Eurocardan 2-plate and 4-plate slip clutches... let me know what model you have... also what is the "spring" size being used... normally 3 different spring sizes...

Maybe we can get ya shoed into a close "torque" number... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(also need to know what implement your hooking it up to, and also max PTO torque or hp your tractor puts out... for more exacting results)

John,

Can I just send you mine and have you set it for me? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I went to the Eurocardan site to see if the adjustment specs might be there. No luck. But there was a description of the slip type clutches. It said "it is used to limit the bending moment to the calibration value that is transmitted in a continuous way." Thank you very much Mr. Manufacturer, that certainly clears things up. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

In my own case, I haven't bought one yet, though the prices listed at the Agri Supply site may change that (TSC wants $90 and Agri lists it for $57). I assume they must be the same brand. There can't be more than two manufacturers (the other being KK) using that same baby-poop color of paint.

My curiosity about adjusting the things was to make sure I wouldn't be replacing a grade-2 shear bolt (a pain, but they always work) with an incorrectly adjusted clutch (which would require enough torque to shear a grade-8 bolt before it worked). History seems to show that if I don't have the right information, I have an amazing ability to find the "breaking point" for things. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
