Looks like what you are trying to do already exists. I would not be surprised if it was all from JD but the thread says the mounting bracket was made by a different company.

You need a 756 (or 856) Turf Mower Traction Unit. Hydraulically driven reel mowers. Pretty rare now. Only available during the first few years of x55 production.

I like that option too ! Trying too find those parts would be a little rough though,

You could use a PTO mounted hydraulic pump and run the towed deck with a hydraulic motor. You could also use a hydraulic ram attached to tongue of the towed unit so you could tow the mower in-line with the tractor for traveling purposes and then kick it out to the side when you're ready mow. While you're at it.... add another cylinder for a hydraulic lift on the travel wheels.

Yeah I thought about that too, I didn't check Surplus Center , but a quick look at the Northern Tool Catalog and I was over a 1000 bucks just for the pump and motor.
