All,
I did speak with Chip. My understanding of the system was confirmed. He thought using a filter was not required. The strainer was enough.
Maybe what was confussing on my first post was, items 1) and 2) were "options" for filter locations. Option 1 was on the large suction line just before the pump. option 2 was on the return of the FEL. I did note my concern of a suction side filter of option one. And I also noted the down side of filtering only the FEL return was I'd only get filtering when using the FEL.
Searching posts regarding filter locations resulted in both of these options. Rob, 3RRL removed his strainer housing completely, tapped a 1" threaded hole where it was orginally attached to the sump. from there he tee'd the rear remote return. My conclsion is that is a No No. Cloged filter could cause starved pump. The second post relating to filter location was Brad Blazer's method. he was kind enough to post his photo to clear up any confussions.
I installed per Brad's method. I just felt after opening the strainer and seeing a 1/2" hole in the mesh, I was being fooled into thinking I was getting any filtering/straining. I did find 100 x 100 mesh at my local hardware store so I could replace the damaged pc.
