Adding Millings to a road/parking lot already rolled to fill in low spots.

Has anyone ever added millings to an existing milling road that was previously rolled to fill in low spots? Can you tell me the process you used and how well it worked out. We have a few areas that are low and collecting water that we would like to raise up.

Also, did you seal your milling road? If you did not, how long can you say it lasted with heavy driving and equipment? If you did seal the road, what product did you use?


We have approximately 2 total miles of roadway including large lots near the barns etc.

The pot hole formed for a reason so simply adding to it rarely works. Typically the permanent fix is to find and fix the source of the issue- water or subsoil.

As far as treating the road surface- Cargill makes a product called “Dust Off” that has been used for years. It takes an application a year to hold up. The next step above that is something like BST which is a slurry and rock chip mix. The BST can last for years with the proper prep.

I have a much shorter drive now but I used the Dust Off at my previous place. Plus the county uses it on the road in front of my place now. Anyway, now I just drag the drive a few times a year (about 20’ to do 1/3 of a mile) with my box scraper. Once I got the water away from the road that’s all it takes.

Some of the "slants and slopes" could be due to the subsoil or even a water issue. As long as we have been here the roads have been uneven. I wouldn't say that they are necessarily pot holes. We just had a company come threw and lay and roll new millings. The roads are much smother now and there is a significant improvement in the dust. We were wondering if in the few areas that still seemed slanted or sloped if we should lay more millings to prevent water from pooling and if we do so, would we cause more harm than good. Does anyone have experience with sealed or unsealed millings and the lifespan of the road (dust wise) if you didn't seal it.

Recently just filled in a low spot on one of our millings roads (culvert replacment and settling).

I just added millings, leveled and compacted, seems to be holding up fine.

Never used a sealant, seems like a waste to me, we maintain 3 miles of hilly roads.
