I would like to add a cross blade to the end of my splitter wedge as I have quite a lot of big wood to split. The cross blade seems like a really good way to go as I will be using tongs and a lift. I figure I should put the leading edge of the cross blade an inch or two forward of the vertical blade so it will cleanly cut off the bottom and leave the top in one piece. Then I can lower and repeat and have small enough pieces I can handle by hand - either for another split or just load them up if small enough. Thinking it would be nice to be able to remove the cross knife if working with smaller logs.

What are good ways to do this? I have seen the slip on type but have also seen some negative comments. Have seen at one that appears to be bolted with the 2 bolts going into the end of the other wedge. Seems like it might be hard to get holes drilled and tapped depending on hardness of wedge. Or Also not sure how big the bolts need to be...

Also thought of some sort of combination of the two ideas - A slip on with bolts that go through the beam right next to the vertical wedge to hold it on. Some sort of attachment seems good so stringy pieces can be lifted to tear off without the blade coming off.

i made one worked ok but i didnt like it it put to much stress on my splitter, also it was more dangours and u cant use it for all logs when splitting a small log it just shaves a small piece of wood off,i find it easyer to handle using 1 wedge.

The north star slip on is not at the top of the vertical knife so it will still have a tendency to split the upper part of the block. I was thinking more along the lines of this by rdbrumfield:

It isn't a close up but the knife ends are slightly forward and it appears to be held on by bolts. He explains how he cuts down large blocks with it.
