I have a 1720 with 1700hrs runs good with some valve clatter. I'm not sure if it's any louder than it ever was but I think the manual says check the valve lifters clearance every 600 hrs... How many of you adjust your lifters as recommended???

I just adjusted mine during a complete rebuild on my 1620 (very similar). Its not a bad job, but you will need a feeler gauge that has the 45 degree bends to get an accurate measurement. Be careful not to tighten them up too much. If I remember correctly the clearance was .008 with the engine cold.

Thanks for the reply and the tip on the feeler gauge.. I'll pick some up. How hard was it to find TDC???

Its not hard. Remove the valve cover, rotate the engine by hand utilizing the fan belt (sometimes you need to pull on the belt to get enough tension for it to turn the crank), TDC is the compression stroke which is after the intake stroke the manual does a really good job of explaining it (search for Shibaura J843 service manual online and you can find it).

I've been Lookin, found a few different ways to get TDC but nothing specific for the j843 diesel..........

I read my service manual and it's the same as the owners manual as far as directions. TDC is the compression stroke and both valves for that cylinder will be closed at the same time. If you rotate the pistons a few times and watch the valves open and close you can get the idea. FYI the intake valve aligns with the intake ports and exhaust valves align with the exhaust ports.

Thanks!! That helps me to understand it!! Some of what I was reading was indicating lining up timing lines and having to take off a few parts of to see the marks.... etc... this seems fairly simple.... Thanks again to everyone!!! This is a terrific forum......
