Hello,
A few weeks ago I picked up a small air compressor for my home garage at a flea market, dont really need it for much, due to having an 80 gallon two stage compressor 2 miles up the road at my shop, but its handy to have one just to blow out carb parts or inflate a tire here and there. The only problem with the compressor when I got it was the plastic line that runs from the tank to the cut off switch was broke off right at the cut off switch. After doing some research online and finding out that the current cut off switch model that I have was discontinued, I called Campbell Hausfeld and asked if there was anything I could do in this situation. The girl took my model and serial number of the compressor and found one that she said is comparable and would work so I ordered it directly from her.

It arrived the other day and I installed it last night. Ran the compressor and it worked great and shut off at 125psi. Then as I was wheeling the compressor back to its spot in my garage I see "100psi MAX" on the side of the tank of my compressor and also on top of the electric motor.

Do you think 25psi over is okay? or I noticed their is a phillips head screw on the top of the cut off switch labeled "pressure adjust" but it marked in such a way that they can tell if you tampered with it.

I am not sure if this is something the girl overlooked when telling me this cut off switch would work or if they know at the manufacture that there is kind of a "buffer zone" that within so many psi its acceptable to be over.

The old gauge on the tank may or may not be accurate? Do you have a clip on ammeter to measure current draw. The pump should shut down at or a few psi above the motor's max continuous current rating.

The new cut off switch came with all new gauges....I do have a ammeter, I will have to check that later on when I make my way out to the garage...

Why would you care if they would know if you tampered with it? You don't have a warranty on it. Plus you want to decrease it, that is for people like me that take out in the field and kick it up to 175psi so I can run 6 nail guns on it.

I got no problem running it at 125psi as long as i dont have to worry about the tank exploding on me or something stupid like that....i only paid 10 bucks for the air compressor

Pressure switches are pretty simple devices that work off spring pressure. If you really want to back it down, just simply back the screw off a turn and see where it cuts out. Personally, I'd leave it alone. 125psi is pretty much a standard pressure for single stage compressors. Your tank should also have a safety pressure releif valve on it that will open if pressure gets too high. Sometimes the setting number is stamped on these valves and if so, you will have an idea at where your tank would be reaching the critical point. Usually, these are set to 150psi.

My thoughts as well.

Maximum operating pressure on the tank means that it was tested to at least 1.5 times the design pressure. Usually design pressure is much more than operation pressure. Even if it was only tested to 150 PSI and stamped as max 100 psi, I think you will be well within the safety limits at 125 PSI. I would just leave it as it is, but if you want to back off the threads on the spring a round and see what that does for you, it is a simple process as MYSFYT stated.

I would check the tank relief valve to make sure that is operational.

I do that, but . . . that's something I'll bet most of us do far too seldom. So this reminder made me go do that to my compressor just now.
