Tractor
JD 750
new here, thanks for the add.

Recently bought a john deere 750 with bucket. We want to get a tiller for the garden and have been looking at the tractor supply tillers, the sub compact and the 4 ft county line model. The tractor is only 20 hp, the sub compact tiller is rated for that range, not the county line which is a 25 and above hp. A local dealer here in town wants to sell me a different model of 4 foot tiller. I don't want to waste my money and buy something to big that the tractor cant handle it, but I see us getting a little bigger tractor years down the road. Any information on if the 750 will run the ts county line 4 footer or should I buy the subcompact tiller? Thanks!

Welcome!

We'll need to know more information to help answer your questions:

- What is the PTO horsepower rating of the JD 750? Not the engine horsepower, but the PTO horsepower.
- What is the minimum PTO horsepower rating of the tillers you are considering?

If the JD 750 PTO horsepower rating is lower than the minimum tiller horsepower rating, it is likely that the tiller will not work well. Basically, you want ample PTO horsepower (but not too much) to run the tiller effectively.

Thanks for the reply! The 750 has a claimed 18 hp pto. I cant find the minimum specs per say on the two tillers, the sub-compact says it works on "not to exceed 25 HP" and the 4 footer says "works on 25-50 HP tractors" I guess this answers my question, I was just hoping the 25-50 would work on the 750.

FWIW...I run a 48" BEFCO tiller behind a 17HP 14HP PTO K_ubota and it turns fine...even in hard packed clay I only need to run at minimal RPMs...

There are a few variables with tractors and tillers.
Size and hp are not the only factors.
If you get a forward turning tiller it is much easier for tractor to use.
Also mine has skids that are adjustable for depth and less depth means less power needed.
Once an area is tilled it will take less to till it on a regular basis and the more you till the better the soil gets.
You can go slow and shallow at first then increase as you work it.
I bought a 4' tiller and it is day and night difference from walk behind. It grinds the soil up including the lumps.

Thanks all for the responses, still leading towards the full size 4 foot tiller over the sub compact.

The 4ft county line model will work for you. It will till up easier in the spring, especially if you have a sandy-loam type of soil. If your soil is harder or if it has sod on it, your 750 in low gear may be a little fast, making the engine bog down or die. Don't ride the clutch to much, just lift the 3-point up a little.

If you had a 755 with a hydro-static tranny it would be much easier to till hard ground.

Thankyou for the info, this is a great site!

I would definitely recommend the bigger tiller. You can always go shallow and make multiple passes. I've had a BIG tiller on my Kubota M6040. It's just a whole lot easier on the overall operation & on the equipment. Make the first pass shallow, to break the sod or surface. Second pass can then go to the depth you need.

I think you will be fine with the 4' tiller. Soil conditions do very of course, but you'll have plenty of tractor for the 4' tiller.
