Having evaluated and driven nothing but new tractors in the past couple of months, I recently saw some used tractors that got me to thinking about the possibilities there.

Maybe I am answering my own question by saying this, but the reason I had only considered new until now was the comfort of the warranty. I understand why tractors maintain both their utility and value as opposed to cars (i.e. a 15 year old car is usually worth little). If I have no realistic amount of time or expertise to repair engines or transmissions, would it be foolish to buy a used tractor without warranty.

I'll give you some specifics to see why I am puzzling this over:
A 2002 New Holland TC45D (hydro, deluxe package) with 16L front loader and 380 hours, for $18,500 and no warranty left. Dealer says it was a trade.

It appears to have been used mostly for loader work, as the cutting edge on the bucket is worn almost completely off on one side and there is a great deal of chipping and rust on the loader.

This is tempting for me in two ways. Of all the new tractors I've evaluated, I thought the TC45 would be the best fit me for what I want to do in the long haul. But I decided I cannot afford a new one. The $18-19k range is my absolute tops for tractor with FEL.

Questions I have include, would it be foolish to buy this used being that I am not mechanically inclined? Hopefully by the time a warranty is over on a new purchase I will have learned something about repairing the thing, but I'll never rebuild a motor.

Other than fluid leaks in the hydraulics, engine and transmission, and maybe the condition of the fluids, what else would be a tipoff to future problems.

This is the real pain in the butt thing: I do not know anyone who could recommend a mechanic to go over it for me, and I do not know any expert users or mechanics myself. Under these circumstances, how else could I proceed to evaluate this machine? Oh, the fate of growing up in the 'burbs.

Finally, I can get a new Kioti CK30 for less ($15,500) or a TC29DA ($18,450) or a JD4310 ($18,500) for similar prices with FEL and R4, and a warranty. Am I foolish to think about the used one. I have a nagging suspicion that I am. 380 hours don't seem like too many for two years of (hard) use. I really like the big loader and lift available on the TC45.

It's tempting, but I just thought of two last questions bugging me about buying used:

If I do get stuck with a lemon, how expensive would parts and labor typically be for engine, transmission, hydraulics or loader repairs compaired to say, car repairs?

Is it reasonable to expect that the dealer would change the fluids and filters on a used tractor before delivery, or offer any other services I haven't thought about?

Thank you for any insights you might offer me. The smaller tractors can accomplish what I need to do, but the bigger one could do some things I maybe would like to do someday. Compromise is so difficult at times.

I've bought units from dealers that wewre trades / lease returns. both with a few months of warranty.. and some without. The main issue is the dealer. if h'es a good guy.. then he's honestly telling you what he knows about the tractor.

If you are seriously worried about servicing your tractor.. or repair issues bother you greatly.. then I'd suggest you buy new. I know the new price on your model may be too much.. but try a 3rd brand.. like mahindra.. etc.

Are you sure it is out of warranty?

New Holland has a 2 year bumper to bumper 3 year powertrain.

I'd have an independent mechanic look it over. Sweetractors can probably recommend one.

Have you considered the TC40D? Ought to be able to get one new for around 21,000 /-. If you've decided that a Class III machine is the right size, you can pay now ($$$) or later (time). Lots of low/no interest financing available.

I'm near Louisville/Shelby County, the tractor is at a Shelbyville dealer.

Interestingly, the only Mahindra dealer near me is the same one who has the used tractor. But, they do not carry the compacts on the lot. He said Mahindra compacts weren't that much different in price from the NH compacts, so they only have the bigger Mahindra ag tractors on their lot.

Yesterday, I spoke with a gentleman who used to be a Ford dealer (now he sells Farmtrac only). He said that when Fiat bought Ford/NH that they pushed the little guys out in favor of the big million dollar + auto mall type setups. That's what the local dealership is like. Maybe that has something to do with not carrying the compact Mahindra. I don't know. So I have not driven Mahindra compacts. According to their dealer search, there is one near Cincinatti and I might be able to drive some there.

Our local NH dealer sells mahindar, NH and mcormick.

I had been looking at tractors in the 54/48 class and had some sticker shock at the 24k$ and asked about the mahindra.. which had a similar model for 18K$.. a substantial difference. I'm sure the region, and individual dealers have a lot to do with pricing as well.

I'd take a different tact. You realize you are not mechanically inclined. What will the TC45 do for you that the 29 or 4310 will not? It seems to me that the NH guys uncovered that there is almost no difference between the Class III boomers because of the hydraulic relief setting, so is there really that big an advantage of a 45 over a 35, and then for that reason the 29? Would the smaller frame machine be even better in some ways?

I guess I'd get one of the smaller machines with a warranty. I did, and I already owe far less than what similar equipment is selling for. If I wanted to move up, I would sell mine and actually come out ahead.

The dealer said it was a "2002" and that it was out of warranty. If it had even 3-4 months of warranty left, I'd feel a whole lot more comfortable with it.

By the way, does $18,500 sound like a a good price for that tractor?

Don't know - you might search the NH buying forum. At the very least, you can find out how much people are paying for a new one & decide how much "premium" the warranty will cost you.
