I never owned a tractor myself. I only have 2 acres but have many projects in mind that I think I need around 40 hp. I would like to move some good size rock and remove some stumps. Live in Ct where the much more rock than dirt. I drove the Yanmar LX4100 and thought it was real nice. I would like to plow or eventually gret a blower and wood chipper and maybe make some $ on the side. Any info would sure help

If you can try as many tractors as you can, sit on them see what gets in your way when getting on and off. Controls easy for you to reach and gauges that can be seen gear vs hst models. Good luck with the hunt!

Some would say rent a big tractor or hire out the one time projects and buy a smaller one for maintaining...

You might consider a bit smaller tractor. Perhaps in the 25-30 HP range.

For 2 acres, it may be easier to till whatever you need to plant than plowing, although rocks might be a problem for plows, disks, harrows, and tillers.

Brush Hog? Mower?

How big of rocks?

And, how big of stumps?

I've got a 3 foot or 4 foot stump that my tractor doesn't do much to other than beat it up a bit (which may help promote rotting). A stump grinder might be nice, but I don't have one. Perhaps another reason to visit a rental yard.

For 2 acres, you probably don't need a 40hp tractor for most jobs, but the side jobs cold change that. It doesn't take much engine power to run hydraulics, so FEL lift capacity is more tied to the tractor size than engine size. Depending on the brand, it's often at the 40hp point where you see a significant increase in size and weight....which normally leads to a jump in price. Will you have a way to load/tow it for the side $ jobs? That can play into how big you want as well....adding a new truck and trailer can get expensive!

I'd also think hard about trying to do side work....will you get a business license, and carry insurance? It's very, very easy to do major damage to things like houses, and cars with a tractor. I've read a bit about side work, like mowing, and brush hogging, and it seems most folks doing it are barely breaking even after everything is added in....fuel, wear and repairs, etc. It can be done, but it does take some thought and careful planning. Just one mistake can tear the gearbox out of a mower, or brush cutter, and that needs to be factored in. My very experienced neighbor (has five tractors) borrowed my 5' cutter yesterday because his needed some welding, and he didnt want to use his 6' cutter on his bigger tractor. Within half an hour, he killed the gearbox (he's going to replace it)....stuff happens, so it's worth considering.

After all of that, I'd say try to drive as many brands, and models as possible....you'll be surprised what you do/don't like, and how much prices can vary for similar capability units from different manufacturers.

If your looking go to multiple dealers and do your research online. Figure out what you really need and what you can live without. Here is a quick list I put together for myself to help me see the numbers on everything I was looking for.

I'm in the camp of hiring the work of a larger tractor or renting equipment to do the larger jobs. Buy a tractor to do maintenance. It seems like 40 hp would be extremely large for two acres. Seems like a 30 hp or less would be appropriate for that size property.

Thank you so much for your input. I wouldn't purchase a trailer and would try to do local jobs that are very close to my home . I would also try to fit the tractor in my garage. I don't have a place suitable for a storage out building. The liability issue is a big consideration I would have to find out what coverage would costs and the additional cost of registering and paying state tax. Thank you for your insight
