I bought a used ZD21 this year and the season is coming to an end. I intend to put it away in a few weeks and then it will sit idle until may.

Since I only put ~50 hours on it I dont see changing the oil as a benefit since it was done right before I received it and in another 50 hours it has to be changed.

I assume I should ;

1) Remove the Battery
2) Fill up the fuel and use a stabilizer (any ideas what kind would be great). 3) Grease all fittings
4) Check the Anti-freeze
5) Inflate the tires (maybe even jack it up)

Any additional advice / comments would be great!

1)The battery- well this is gonna be a heated debate here- I personally don't mess with it. I just cover the exposed metal terminals with vaseline. I don't see the point of removeing the battery unless you can put it to good use in another machine for the winter.
2)seafoam states its compatible with diesel as a stablizer. I hope you added power service or howes
3)greasing everything is a must for sure. I do this to keep rust at bay and moisture out.
4)checking the anitfreeze is a good idea and make sure its rated for lowest temp in your area
5)If you don't have a leak in tire- I'd leave it till spring. What do you park it on? wood is good.

I've had my ZD21 for 5 or so years, (and average about 40 hours a year), here's what I do:
1) Change the oil and filter, (at 50 hours you should as well)
2) clean the deck
3) Sharpen the blades and level the deck
4) grease every fitting
5) top off the fuel tank and give it a double shot of diesel conditioner
6) clean the air filter

I leave the battery in it and don't bother to put it up on blocks. It starts like a charm in the spring and it's ready to go after a quick check, (tire pressure, fluids, etc).

Every other year:
1) change the coolant
2) replace the air filter
3) replace the hydro fluid and filter
4) replace the fuel filters, (for some reason there are 2)

Thanks guys - great input and I will put this all to good use.

Radioman - I do have a question though. In #2 you state...."I hope you added power service or howes"......I went on line to see what these are - I have to admit I have never used them. Can you please elaborate for me? it sounds like I should have been using these but I havent!!!

Thanks,

~jim

the power service is a diesel additive you add to your feul. It boosts the cetane numbers and add lubrication on the firing side of the pistons. If you get the white bottle, it helps with the gelling issue. the gray bottle is good for lube and cetane for better starting. power service also sells green label in white bottle for keeping diesel fresh for more then 3 months.

Is your machine a gas engine or diesel ? I assume its diesel which is why i recommended the power service or howes.
