AFFORDABLE 7\' cutters - single/dual spindle

Dad is thinking of a TC40 for the farm. Wondering if we can get into a 7' cutter for it.

Woods std duty was $2800
Befco Medium duty (std not avail) $3600 + not recommended for 40HP compact

What's out there in 7' size for less than $2K?

Check out Howse ... Soundguy recently got a 10" that was reasonable... (Later he admitted it was a 10' /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) I have heard that 7 footer singles can be harder to pull than an 8 footer.

I was considering a BH84T but got scared off by stories of mangled frames. I got a MD 6 foot instead, and really like it.

Re: AFFORDABLE 7\' cutters - single/dual spindle

I have a 7' Rhino 3pt. hitch, single spindle rotary cutter. There is no way that a 40 hp tractor can keep the front end on the ground with my cutter. A dual spindle would not extend as far behind the tractor but I'm not aware of a 7' unit in a dual spindle model. You may me thinking of a pull type instead of 3 pt. In a heavy stand of grass you're going to give the 40 hp tractor a work out I think with a 7' cutter.

I know a 7' is pushing it a bit. Just trying to weigh the options. The 6' price is much more attractive. Plus, Dad is retired, so in theory, he has plenty of time (ya right, Mom keeps him busier now than ever /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif). It will certainly be faster than the 4 footer on my TC18.

Unless you are cutting saplings greater than 1" or mowing rough pasture, a 7' finish mower will work perfectly on your tractor and cost less than $2000. Most brands are a lot tougher than you might think.

Rockyridge is correct.

I did buy a 10".. which turned out to be a 10' after my cat helped my to type with my glasses off! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That howse was 23xx and about 25xx with tax.. nice unit.. real heavy duty. I've mowed with it 4 times now.. and taken down 7' weeds no problem... 2" trees cut down no problem.. even nocked over a 2" tree no problem when I made a wide turn and the side of the mower caught it. Mines a 3pt, 2 spindle, with 2 tail wheels.

Try kodiak.. they were my next option for price.. i think they have a 7' model.. but like the guys said.. 7' single blade is harder than 8' 2 blades.. either is probably rated higher than 40hp for 'optimum ' cut.. but unless you are cutting thick stuff.. you might get away with it. Check to see if you can get an 8' pull behind. For some reason, when i was looking at the kodiak cutters.. the pull behind models were rated at needing 5hp less than the coresponding 3pt models. for instance.. the 7/8/10' 3pt models rated as needing a higher hp by 5hp than the pull models.. course the pull models were also 10-20% more expensicve than the 3pt models...
