to create a lawn? I am taking down about 80 trees and I need to rip out the remaining roots and I will have to spread alot of top soil and grade the yard. i may need to get some fill dirt to bring up the level of the yard as well
(I have a BX24 and a Polaris 800 ATV)
Thanks

A boxblade would be your best bet for both. I would think the boxblade teeth would tear out a lot of the roots. It would work real well for leveling up your dirt you have hauled in also a loader would be a big help.

If you have to bring in top soil, be sure to mix it in well with the existing soil. This creates what is known as a transition layer. Usually, when you just put top soil on your native soil, water sits between the two different soils, and when grass roots hit the slow draining water, they die due to lack of oxygen.

You would be better off to bring in some compost, maybe some granite too, mix with existing soil, and regrade. This is how we deal with heavy clay in southern Oregon. Top soil usually contains a lot of foreign weeds.

I agree with the two previous posters. My second choice would be a good landscape rake. Jay

Hmm. I'm doing that myself.

I use bush hog to cut that forest floor. A backhoe to dig out the stumps.

Than put down soil amendments.

Then rototill to mix, chop up roots, and pop up rocks.

Then landscape rake to collect all the trash.

Then box blade if necessary.

Then grass seed.

I've been told a harley rake would put a couple of those steps into one, but I have the above, and don't have a harley rake.

I'm not sure how big the trees are, but you are describing a job for a track loader. A fews hours of work will leave you with a brush pile to burn, new dirt spread and and roots out of the ground.

In the long run it will be less expensive. If you are married, it will save you a lot of discussions about when you are going to be done.

A root rake will be good for final grade and seed planting.

What would I use to spread the dirt and top soil? Loader and then box blade?

Also is a root rake a landscape rake?

Is there a good website besides TSC and Northern tool to buy these smaller implements?

Thanks for all the help!

On my area that I'm putting a field into, it has a lot of tree branches just under the surface. These jam a tiller very easily.
Would a plough or a box blade be best to start things off, then tilling?

We don't have a TSC in our area, they go by another name here, Dels.

Maybe let us know how big the trees are and how they will be removed.:D :D :D

From what I recall in areas where land is cleared for farming a dozer with a root rake would work best. Follow this up with a large disk behind the dozer. Chances are this type of equipment will not be available so go for a tracked hoe for tree and stump removal, plow and disk and then use as long a drag as you can pull for leveling and evening things up. If you add topsoil do so before the disking stage.:D :D :D

What kind of trees and how large? If they are small ones the BX should be able to dig them up and you can pull up the larger roots with bucket around the trees. In the past with a small tractor w/box blade it does not take much root to stop the tractor. Once the trees are up I would disc up ground or till and spread new dirt and make a drag and level the ground. A lawn roller would be nice you could level, pack and level again and stop some of the settling. Your BX is a pretty powerful machine. I have a friend that has a BX and he ripped his bucket apart digging stumps. We reinforced the bucket and it works great now. Good luck on the land clearing and using the BX. big dan
