I saw a bunch of AGCO 15W-40 oil rated CI-4 (not that CJ-4 junk) at the local farm supply.

Does anyone know who manufactures AGCO oil and is it an excellent oil or just oil ??

Thanks.

Many oil formulators, incl. Castrol, buy their base oils from Exxon, the largest lube oil manufacturer in the world. They may or may not purchase the additive technology as well. Castrol develop their own.

You'd be better off if you used a 5w-40. This is available diesel rated.

Wow - I posted your question over at BITOG, and none of those guys had an answer on the mfr, either. It must REALLY be a big secret!!

The 5w-40 oil will be picked up by the oil pump quicker on startup than the 15w-40 oil. BOTH oils will be more viscous on startup than in operation.

Getting oil to the upper valve train on startup is one of the main reasons why synthetic oil almost eliminates the wear up there but also gives more fuel economy and hp.

I use a 0w30 in all my engines now: 2 diesels, 4 gas.

I'm an AGCO dealer. My AGCO oil spec book says the 15W40 oil meets the CI-4 API Service rating. AGCO oils are an excellent quality, not your average oil. This particular oil is specially formulated for diesel engines including high performance, fuel effecient, & low emission engines. It works well in gasoline engines too!

Warren Distribution (Warren Distribution - Since 1922 - Omaha, NE) has been the "AGCO approved supplier for oils and lubricant products since 1999" (AGCO Lubricants and Oils Reference Guide, published 02/2007, AGCO Parts Division).

I have no idea who blends and makes AGCO's lube oils. But AGCO's name is on the jug, and their warrantys would sure be in force when their oil is used, so I would venture to say that the AGCO line of lubes will be of good quality and work fine, likely made if not by a major oil company at least a very reputable one.
I am confused as to your statement about CJ-4, the latest API spec for Diesel service oil, and required by many engines built after 2007? I would not be hesitant to pour CJ-4 into anything I have, old or new.
