Got some time on mine today too, for the first time this year! Greased the FEL and thought about a good cleaning as she was purty dirty. But thought I should be productive so used her first as a glorified wheel barrow and hauled some cedar tree branch trimmings (to warm up a bit... I was stiffer than she was) and then got her on the side hill for some initial terracing work. This is pucker factor stuff.

Been a slow mud season here so far...a nice slow snow melt helps!

Glad winter finally appears to be over. Have mowed twice so far. Had to wear a jacket on the first mowing. We have been below normal all winter.
Don't envy you guys in the north and northeast with all the snow. Good for using your tractor to move snow but still prefer warm and sunny.
Hope the melt continues to go slow to avoid flooding.

I did some digging in the garden today; found frost about four inches down.

Glad to see spring is here - birds singing, pastures greening - a beautiful sight. Three months from now it will just be H O T
Spent most of my free time since the first of February taming 1/2 mile of treeline that was overhanging the pasture. New home construction is to begin soon and I needed to clear a path to lay a road for the work crews. I've got several miles that need trimmed to make haying more productive but that will be for another time. My next project, since we have no more plans for cattle, is to remove a lot of cross-fencing.
We're definitely into the rainy season, so it's a little hit and miss for now.
So far, it's shaping up to be an exciting spring and a productive year.

Mowed twice here and rightly should have mowed twice more but I was out of town for a month. That sure made mowing wet green grass fun... :confused2:

We are still surrounded in snow but the bare patches are increasing. Where the water from the melt builds on the surface you get a little pond. When you come back later you see a drain hole where the pond was, and melt water running into it. Then if you step near there, the ground you step on caves in 3-4 inches from being heaved by ice, the hollowed and thawed by the melt water. It is something to see the water sink out of sight at a good clip.
Didn't need a winter coat today. Grackles were eating the chickens' scratch feed left over. I found a dead one on the ground. Might have hit the window and flown to the spruce 20' away before falling from the tree. Ugly almost at a distance, this bird's iridescent colors were amazing as I held it in my hand - shades of blue, purple, green. Such a shame to have made it so far, then died.
I heard a song sparrow- first of the year.
-Thought I heard a tree swallow for a second, will check again tomorrow.
It is such a pleasure knowing a bunch of bird songs, working outside, I don't have to stop and look- I just know what it is and keep right on doing what I was. Besides, one eye isn't as sharp as it was a year ago, 1/2 blur - cuts down the visual acuity!
Last night we let the fire go out. First time since we started the heating season.
