The old Emglo wheelbarrow compressors that we owned, had two ways of operating. They had the normal on and off cycle mode with the air pressure switch, or you can open up a valve that went to an unloader valve set a few psi lower then the shut off pressure for the switch and the electric motor just kept spinning and would pump air when needed and then unload. On construction sites they could run several guns at a time and the motors actually lasted longer because of not having to start under load all the time.
My Dewalt and Emglo compressors with the Airmate direct drive compressor unit all have a type of delay/unloader valve between the pump and the tank check valve. They have a popet that
opens after the motor shuts down so there is no load on the compressor until it has pumped air for a few seconds, sometimes these will stick open and some people believe the compressor is bad (got one from goodwill that way).
