On my YM 240D (green, serial # 00566), my add-on, no name front end loader won't lift and has air in the lines. The no-lift has been a more and more frequent, intermittent problem for a couple of years. Usually, pointing the tractor down hill has temporarily "fixed" the problem (think fluid to the front where the pump is) and changing hy-trans oil and cleaning the filter screen used to help. Most of my place is on a slope.

Designed as an ag tractor for flat rice fields, the fluid reservoir is long and skinny and sized for the original usage. I suspect the FEL uses much more fluid than that. Having kept the fluid level only at the full mark, have I been starving the pump since the loader was installed, at least when driving up hill? Last year, I started over-filling the reservoir and that helped some. The pump is external, so I'm ready to have it rebuilt, but thought I should ask here first, since I read the thread about how durable the pumps were. Hoye sells them for $338.

The hy-trans dip stick has a yellow plastic top with somewhat stripped threads, and has English "oil" and some Japanese lettering on it. Is that the right stick for this model? The engine oil stick is all metal so I am skeptical about the plastic topped stick being the right length.

When you say external pump, do you mean the pump on the engine front cover or is there a front crankshaft pump with a seperate oil tank? Tha trans dipstick sounds correct. The trans should be about half full & being on a hill shouldn't starve the original tractor pump. Thet pump can be partially rebuilt with new parts.

Len, thanks for the quick reply.
The pump (I think it is a pump) is on the right front of the engine. I'm not aware of a separate oil tank.

that is your hydraulic pump. I can rebuild it or supply parts for it ( depending on what is wrong with i) Or i have new or used pumps available.

"Designed as an ag tractor for flat rice fields, the fluid reservoir is long and skinny and sized for the original usage."

What fluid reservoir are you referring to? The transmission is the fluid reservoir. Are you checking the fluid by only resting the dip stick on the threads as opposed to screwing it in? That makes a lot of difference in fluid volume.

Norm--Haven't looked lately, but I believe my owner's manual said to just rest the threads on the opening, when checking the engine oil. I assumed that applied to the hy-trans fluid too. So that has been my method.

I just installed a koyker loader Thursday. The instructions said to extend the cylinders to the full limit after you first started the tractor. When I did this I could tell that the air was being purged. A man that I know owned a kubota dealership and worked at a New Holland dealership for a few years. He says to add a extra quart of hyd fluid once the full mark is reached. This is with the bucket curled and the lift down. Hope some of this will help. big dan
