Air ratchet repair.

I repaired/rebuilt, a lot of them many years ago, sometimes when the mechanic/owner had already tried to do it himself. It's like anything else; not a bad job IF you know what you're doing and almost impossible otherwise. I usually started by disassembling tools and thoroughly cleaning them in my parts washer.

Yes it’s a CP 828, I found the paper work. I’m not suse what shifting to neutral is. Just hold it between neutral and reverse? I took the snap ring off but couldn’t get it apart. I saw it was gunked up under the snap ring and that is when I ran some PB Blaster through it.

I found the paperwork with an exploded view but directions on how to take it apart. Might be time for a You

I have the same vintage ratchet.... Like others have stated, run some on blaster threw him, Reverse and forward. I do the same now and again prolly once a Year or so with my impact guns and ratchet.

Old mechanic friend of mine would run solvent or mineral spirits threw his air guns and ratchets followed by air tool oil when air tools had ailments.

Some times people forget air tools need lube occasionally.... Try the PB blaster thing then follow up with pneumatic tool oil...

You are correct about shifting into neutral.
Wiggle the knob a little while you try to remove the head kit.
It will come out.
No amount of lube will overcome the worn parts.
Search CP828 head kits.
Techs used to keep the head soaking overnight in ATF to help with service life.
Body shop guys would use plastic head boots to keep out the dust.
