Consider this a public service announcement.

I noticed the homier website has a couple neat items on sale pretty decently right now.

First one is a trailer dolley.. those little 2 wheeled hand cart looking things with a trailer ball on them for moving your small trailer around. 20 bucks.. not a bad deal.

Next one could be even better. It is their inline air regulator/dryer for use with paint guns. I bought one like this to do my painting.. it works great.... also 20 bucks ( is 30 bucks in the store ).

For you guys that want to do hobby painting this is the way to go.. get a 10-15$ gun and this 20$ regulator, and a couple 5$ hoses, and use your existing air compressor. Even a small pancake compressor can let you paint small projects with some patience. Plumb in an extra air tank.. like the kind we tot around to air tires up ( 10 gallon to 15 gallon ) and you have a small working paint rig.

For reference.. I've painted 2 tractors this way using just harbor freight stuff.. pancake compressor and all.. 150$ worth of stuff.. gun, reg, lines, compressor and tank.... It's a cheap gun.. but works fine.

I know many of you guys are wanting to get your feet wet with painting.. here are links to the online items I mentioned.

And no.. I'm not affiliated with them in any way...

The dolly is:

And the air regulator.. is:

That micro-fog lubricator might mess up a paint job?

Soundguy,

I do quite a bit of painting. I WOULD NOT use that regulator filter combo. First, you DO NOT want an oiler in your paint setup. Second, you are much better off with a better filter, I use an 880A from Sharpe (http://www.sharpe1.com/control.htm). You can get cheaper versions. Just my 2 cents!

1, if you don't put oil in it.. you don't get oil in the line. ( manual specifically states this.. for painting)...

2, I don't do alot of painting.. say.. 1 tractor per year. and a 19$ air reg is fine for that.. compaired to 'the sky's the limit' on comercial stuff.

So far I've never had a clogged tip or venturi, or a water droplet come out in my paint. I drain the water trap on the tank and the regulator every night.

If the filter seems inadequate.. disposable inline filters are about 4$ each via campbell hausfield at tsc stores.. or a tad more at welding supply stores ( use inline for things like plasma cutters.. etc.. ).

My message was directed at the hobbiest who wants to do a tad bit of painting on the cheap.. for instance.. my complete 150$ rig.. not a guy who paints cars for a living, or motorcycles for american chopper.... etc.

For those even cheaper than I.. Campbel hausfield even makes a cheaper reg.. 9.99.. I've seen them at tsc.. simple dial calibrated.. and then use an inline filter..etc.

Soundguy,

Understand where you are coming from, and it makes sense! I didn't realize, that you could just not put oil in the oiler.

I would still recommend better quality, even for occasional painting, as the quality of the air can maka a big fifference in the quality of the paint job. If a few extra dollars can improve the results of the investment in time and material to paint a tractor (or whatever) then, in my mind, it is worth it, again just my 2 cents!

OK, so I have a silly question. How different are the results between using a setup like discussed here and using a spray can paint for small projects? Is it absurd to even compare the two?

Cliff,

I can't answer for Soundguy, but the differences between rattle can paint jobs and siphon or HVLP guns is control and transfer efficiency. You cannot control the fan, material thickness or slow down and/or speed up drying times with additional reducers, catalysts and air pressure. The rattle cans do a very good job on small parts when you use the high line paint (Plasti-kote, dupli color, etc.)

Not too long ago, the high dollar siphon spray gun had a maximum of 35% transfer efficiency...or 65% waste in the form of over spray....65 cents of every dollar was waste from sprayable material. Now the industry leaders like SATA guns runs 75-80% transfer efficiency. There is no comparison in newer HVLP guns for control of air, chemicals, drying times and top coat, clear coat finishes.

I agree with all but I am from the Soundguy side. I will never do enough painting to justify commercial or even higher end amature stuff. I bought a HF detail gun, etc last fall and will use it this spring to paint some projects I've been working on.

Alot of determining factors, compressor size (CFM's), wanting to do it myself, painters..even friends and aquantences not wanting to really do what I want or in my mind price prohibitive, the want to get a better job than spray can, etc.

I for one am glad my thoughts have been validated by Soundguy as I have seen pics of his tractors and certainly see nothing wrong with the paint jobs.

Regards,
Kevin
