Yep.. the spray gun makes a world of difference over a rattle can.

And so far.. my cheapy rig is doing fine. Mbrule does ahve a good point on the filter. Even using the 19$ harbor freight one.. it won't hurt to grad a 4.99$ disposable inline cartridge from tractor supply and toss it inline for the painting job.. and then simply toss it befor ethe next paint job. Still comes in under 25$ and adds another degree of safety/cleanliness to the job.

That said.. cleaning the gun is a big deal. I always clean the outside of my gun shiny.. and clean the bowl or can to 'perfectly' clean.. no hit of residue.. and that does for the gun top and venturi, and tip/needle.

I run naptha thru the gun after cleaning and spray till it is clear.. and no color srips out of the syphon tube.. Then it goes back in the box with the reg till the next use.

For a tractor paint job it is working fine so far.

When you clean your paint gun, take the neadle tip and spring out and remove the nozzle. Clean inside the gun and nozzle with a brissle brush using solvent. Next time it will be ready to use and won"t spit old paint into your project.

There should have been a wrench included with your paint gun. That will remove the nozzle tip.

So far I havn't had any contamination issues.. but then.. I run a few ounces of naptha thru, as well as cleaning the bowl and top cover till there are no signs of paint.. in the syphon tube as well.

If you ever use your setup for an air operated tool and use the oiler, you should not use the same air hose for painting as you have contaminated the hose with oil. I would remove the oiler and only use the filt/reg and a clean hose for painting purposes. If you have used the oiler, just emptying it is not enough. Oil will probably still pass, contaminating the clean hose as well as the painting. It's probably a lot easier just to pull the oiler off completely. It looks like a modular unit, and the filt/reg part should be threaded both sides. If oil mist gets in the paint it will cause fish eyes. If you only occasionally use air tools, it's probably easier just to add a couple of drops of air tool oil into the inlet of the tool before each use.

Like I said.. I've never used the oiler portion.

And yes.. I usually add a drop or two of oil to the tool itself.
